Columbia 26 Booms

I have a 1974 Columbia "K" 26. The clue outhaul plug seems to be a bit strange looking, and nobody I have talked to seems to know how it is suppose to be rigged. Has anybody had any experience they could share with me?

A picture is priceless, I'd bet other boats of the era had something similar

Re: Columbia 26 Booms

Same as the original boom on my Columbia 26.

You've got two steel bails on the end. One is for the mainsheet and one is for the topping lift. On mine, I don't have a real topping lift, rather a cable that comes off the backstay with a hook. I don't know if this is original to the C26, but I actually like that better than a traditional line type topping lift.

The half circle with groove thingy is for your outhaul. You should have a cleat farther forward on that side of the boom that the outhaul line cleats to. This makes for a miserable outhaul, hard to get tight with the friction against that half circle thing and no mechanical advantage to light tightening and cleating. But it works ... sort of.

Re: Columbia 26 Booms

I thought it was something like that, but there is no cleat or even holes in the boom where a cleat used to be, and this left me scratching my head. I thought I was missing something. I guess I'll install a cleat.
Thanks, this helped a lot.

Re: Columbia 26 Booms

It's possible that outhaul was once rigged to go all the way to the gooseneck, down, and back across the cabin top allowing outhaul adjustment from the cockpit. That would explain no cleat on the boom. Although it would seem to be an unusual setup for a simple sailer like a C26. Simplest solution is to attach a cleat to the boom. One step better would be to rig a small pulley on the outhaul line, then run a line from that new cleat, around the pulley, and back to the cleat. That would give you 2:1 advantage on the outhaul. Best solution would be to replace that aluminum half circle thing with a real turning block, but that might involve some boom end surgery.
