Pearson keel voids and solutions

I have a 1972 Pearson 33 that was totaled in a bad storm while on the hard last spring. During repairs I found a water filled void in the bottom of the Keel below the bilge sump. After draining and filling this with some epoxy I noticed that the rest of the keel around the center board is also Hollow. I'm considering an expanding epoxy and Lead ingots to repair this. Has anyone else experienced this problem? And does anyone think it would be better using expanding epoxy over regular epoxy resin?Click image for larger version

Re: Pearson keel voids and solutions

Lead ingots would add ballast, nothing more.
I've never heard of expanding epoxy, usually urethane "insulation" foam is used as an expanding material. And some of that is non-porous and waterproof, others not. With any large volume of epoxy you may also have some issues with heat, it gives off lots of heat while curing.
If anything expands too much and pushes the walls of the "slot" too close to the centerboard, that may also be a problem.

Re: Pearson keel voids and solutions

Quite common in Pearsons to have a deep sump on the aft end of the keel. Saw a 424 that was hauled and blocked incorrectly and when the Travelift lowered it it crushed that cavity. I would leave it empty. Nice having a deep sump.
