Family Name (numbers) for Volvo Penta D2-55C

Hi all,

I have a boat I plan to import to the USA. It has two Volvo Penta D2-55C engines and the EPA form requests the "family name" which is a number for these engines. This in addition to the serial numbers, etc.

I have contacted Volvo America...nope.

I have been to a Volvo Penta dealership...nope.

I have searched the EPA data base...no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Engines are 2006

BTDT. The engines are actually Perkins engines and they supply the emissions certification, so it shows up under Perkins, not Volvo. The family name is required to be on the EPA emissions decal that is required to be on the engine. Here's a photo from one of our D2-40s.

Re: Family Name (numbers) for Volvo Penta D2-55C

If I had to guess (if you don't have access to the decals):

6H3XN2.20D55

The first character (6) is the model year, so you should confirm (could be a year before/after what you think)

The next 3 are the manufacturer code H3X = Perkins

The next , N, is the type = marine compression ignition

The next is the engine displacement in liters (2.20 for the D2-55)

The last is the manufacturer's identification of the engine, so this is a guess based on ours being "D40" for D2-40 engines.

Re: Family Name (numbers) for Volvo Penta D2-55C

As Stated, the D2-55c is a Perkins/ISM design that was marinized for VP.

The basic engine is a Perkins 404c model, but that's probably not the "family name" you are looking for, and I'm not so sure that the emission label as seen for the D2-40 was in place on the engine at the time the "C" model was built.

I'll check on my engine (also D2-55c) this weekend and let you know if it's there.....

If not it should be available from VP.

The earliest I found a certificate-of-compliance for in the EPA lists was a 2007. Family was
7H3XN2.22D55. Listed under the Shibaura name. That same engine is listed continuously pretty much from 2007 to present. Didn't see it in 2006 and prior, so you may have to do a little more digging (or see if the engines are model year 2007 even though they were installed 2006).

Re: Family Name (numbers) for Volvo Penta D2-55C

Trying to remember all the details that went around in my head when we imported the boat. The 2006 year is tricky, that's when emissions requirements went into effect. So, if you have 2006 engines they may not be compliant/required. The 2007 model year was the initial submission for these engines, prior to that there was no requirement.

From the EPA instructions:

Quote:
For engines that are not yet subject to EPA emission standards, importers should check box 17 or 18 on Form 3520-21. These include engines that were manufactured before applicable emission standards were in effect. A recreational marine compression-ignition engine below 2.5 liters per cylinder imported under this provision must be manufactured before the 2006 model year
Looks like you are right on the cusp, so I suspect you will need exact information on engine manufacture/installation dates.

You may be able to check box 17 under the exemption schedule box C (>37kW and <0.9 l/cylinder) - for these engines the requirements did not go into effect until model year 2007.

Re: Family Name (numbers) for Volvo Penta D2-55C

Just remembered that the decal isn't on my engine as the timing case was damaged and replaced, and the decal was either destroyed or wasn't there to begin with. My engine is pre 2006.

If you can provide the serial numbers of the engines it's easy to find the production dates. The serial number is on the sticker on the valve cover, or on the riveted plate adjecent to the injection pump.

Yeah, there won't be any sticker/decal built prior to the 2007 model year, simply wasn't required. But since model years don't coincide with calendar years, for something 2006 (calendar year) it could actually have a 2005, 2006, or 2007 model year. The later in 2006 the engine was installed the more likely it is to have a 2007 model year.

Re: Family Name (numbers) for Volvo Penta D2-55C

Just looked up production dates for the D2-55C and found info that indicates the C version was built in 2004 and 2005. This might be accurate and means a 2005 engine could have been installed in a 2006 boat.

Again with the serial number it's easy to find the actual production date on the VP website.

That should be good news to the OP. Tick box 17 on the 3520-21 form and ignore the information about family name and conformity.

Family Name (numbers) for Volvo Penta D2-55C

Worth preparing the EPA paperwork. Legal requirements and all. But not all ports ask for it, and some always ask. Or so I have heard.

I’m not saying try to slide by, just don’t be sad if no one seems to care when you make sure you comply.

I made sure I complied. And no one asked. I wasn’t sad.

Tell them the name s "Bob". It's as good as the next thing-- they just have blanks to fill in.
