Mediterranean Mooring set up options

We just moved from a mooring field to a liveaboard marina here in Key West. Its a Mediterranean mooring ball set up along side is a floating dock. We take our 39 ft sail cat out quite often. Can someone advise a set up that would be quick to release when heading out and quick to hook up when returning to the ball. We have to back over the ball to get in our slip so needless to say tying knots etc. would not be the best case scenario .
Pictures, suggestions etc. Very much appreciated
Thanking you in advance

Re: Mediterranean Mooring set up options

We don't have a cat, but, we Med-Moored for years.
In our case we approach the buoy bow first with the slip beyond, we had a messenger line going to a chain, this was brought up after fishing the float with a boat hook, capstan pulled the line till the chain climbed on deck where the chain stopper was fitted. Motoring at idle ahead full rudder, toward the slip, and as the mooring took up it would swing the boat about 180 degrees and then reverse the last few yards.

In your case, I would get two nylon, sinking pennants and attach them to the mooring chain/line under the ball. They must be sized perfectly for your beam, and reach to the dock under tension. There should be a pair of thin pick up lines attached to the splices of the mooring pennants. The ends float with small fishing style floats.

Method is to reverse over the buoy, straddling it, then pick up the floats, pull in the lines till the pennants are looped over the fwd mooring cleats, then reverse hard to get near the dock, and make fast aft.

Hope that helps you.
