Girl Killed by 3 Sharks in Bahamas

In the news today. One source said these were tiger sharks.

I would be interested to know for a fact what species did this.

Tragic, rare event. Would be interesting to know what set them off.

I went scuba diving in Bimini last week and the dive operators are chumming for and feeding sharks to entertain scuba divers!

They claim they are only attracting reef sharks but a dive master admitted that they occasionally attract a non-reef shark.

Might have been a factor, but men do get attacked too.

I know that but.. unusual for 3 to attack like this its more often a lone shark involved..
They must have scented something that stimulated a feeding frenzy..

I doubt that tikers/hammerheads/makos are disgusted by fresh meat...

Re: Girl Killed by 3 Sharks in Bahamas

It's an established practice not to provide food for top carnivores such as bears and alligators so that they are not conditioned to associate people with food. Sharks are no different. It's a mistake for us to train sharks to response to humans as a food supply. Sure, not all shark attacks are a result of this tourism shark feeding, but it's a risky trend.

or as logic would dictate: if you feed the sharks then you damn sure better stay out of the water

I was under the impression that most sharks in shallow Bahamian waters were reef sharks.

I've never bought into the belief that reef sharks are completely harmless so would be interested to know what sharks did this.

I've dove with dozens of reef sharks swimming about in French Polynesia....black tip, white tip, grays.....Harmless they say. Personally, I think any creature with a prehistoric brain and TEETH is a potential risk.

Re: Girl Killed by 3 Sharks in Bahamas

I was in the Bahamas around that area about 10 years ago. There were companies running big powerboat excursions there out of Nassau. They would all be cleaning fish for lunch on the beach and tossing the scraps and carcass in the water to attract sharks for the tourists. The sharks would go into a frenzy.

Edit: I dug up an old photo album and found some pics.

Ignorance is not exclusive it seems, comments dont end with question marks.
It has long been my understanding that sharks are attracted by scent and vibrations.. blood being one of the scents and the vibrations that are created by the flexing of knees and ankles which apparently can mimic a fish in distress.
But hey.. Everyones gotta start somewhere, banging ones head on a wall only satisfies the self and resolves nothing.. Inspire us with your wisdom kind sir..

It’s why I try to tell people that are going to spear fish, that if your not prepared to defend that fish from a shark, don’t shoot it.
Based on the theory that sharks equating Scuba divers as a food source may not be a good idea.
Many people don’t like that, and I’ve only had one shark get really aggressive on me, and I didn’t have a fish at the time, but had just shot one.
It wasn’t a Bull. I would have expected that, it was a Hammer, which I had always been told were actually pretty laid back, non aggressive types.
What I find strange about this attack is that there were three Sharks, I’ve not seen that, except from some form of feeding activity.

The consensus among marine biologists and scuba divers is that menstruation does not increase the risk of a shark attack.
