C&C Landfall 48 Rudder

Hello,
I have a C&C Landfall 48 with a broken rudder. Previous owner hit rocks sideways and sheared off the rudder just below the skeg and the rudder post is fine. I need the dimensions of the rudder. I spoke with the Maritime museum in Kingston, Ont. (they are the keeper of all the C&C original plans) Unfortunately they do not have the info on the 48 rudder. Anyone have a 48 they could measure or know of one?
Thank you,

Re: C&C Landfall 48 Rudder

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Breg.

The museum would have been your best resource, but perhaps there's something relevent at the C&C Photo Album & Resource Center

South Shore Yachts is run by ex C&C employees and they have virtually every C&C drawing. They will happily sell you a copy.

Re: C&C Landfall 48 Rudder

Thanks for the replies. I have tried South Shore Yachts and the Maritime Museum in Kingston, Ontario. The 48' landfall is the one they don't have. Still looking but have made other contacts and don't expect the replacement to be that difficult to have made. I have enough pictures that can be scaled so I'm sure we will get it very close and most likely a more efficient composite rudder.

Suggest you consider 3M micro balloons in US Composites 635 THIN resin as filler. Waterproof forever and many times stronger than foam or balsa. See our photos on this site. 3 gallons epoxy, 10 gallons balloons, drywall mixer and a big drill motor. It made up two X 7 gallon buckets. It’s like warm Kraft marshmallow cream. Reaction is very slow so no heat problem. My pour was 5 inches thick and took three days for a sandable cure.

Re: C&C Landfall 48 Rudder

Did you make your new rudder yet?

If not, I can get the dimensions from my boat. I had a new rudder made in Trinidad a few years ago because the rudder stock at the water line was badly corroded. I could measure my rudder and make some cardboard profiles to get the shape. I'll be back to the boat in February. I have several photos of the project.

Re: C&C Landfall 48 Rudder

Thanks for the replies. I have not had the rudder made yet. She's coming out at the end of December somewhere between Jacksonville fl and Savannah. I'm looking for a shop anywhere in that area that I can drop the rudder off to. Wheumann; thanks for the offer and I may take you up on it. Although I think we can scale the profile from the many pictures I've accumulated.
The bottom line now is I'm looking for a good, reasonable shop to rebuild it. it is solid but missing from about level with the skeg.
Thanks again for the replies and I look forward to any further sdvice.

Re: C&C Landfall 48 Rudder

Breg,
Once you have the proper dimensions you could make your own.

We replaced our rudder last year after a PO installed a flat board for a rudder w/no lift. It was actually easier than one would think w/a lot of online tools available.
Our rudder was essentially laminated Coosa HDU board, then using a router, removed the excess HDU to form the NACA 0010 shape we wanted. Did take some research, but we wrote down the project details which should save you a lot of time/effort to find the relevant info.
Once you have the rudder dimensions and the post out you could then calculate the buoyancy needed to achieve a neutral/slightly positive buoyancy rudder by selecting the proper HDU density. Its a rough calculation but slightly positive is better than a negative rudder.
Your project will be slightly different than ours, but after you set your rudder post and extensions/tabs, it will go fairly quickly.

It was a very rewarding project to complete. If you decide to make it yourself, hope you show us pics after it done.

Hello Wheumann.
As expected I do and will have some questions for you. We just brought our Landfall from Bimini to northern FL last week. We made the crossing cautiously with the broken rudder. We were only getting about 6.1 knots motoring and I'm starting to thing the prop is undersized. She'll be pulled in a couple of weeks and I'll get a good look at everything. What size prop are you running? I'm seeing maybe 22" is optimum. Do you know your size and pitch?

Thanks
