Large Catamaran Flips In Sydney

A large catamaran has flipped in Port Hacking on the southern side of Sydney. This location is a protected water/anchorage and not subject to rough seas. The winds were about 16 to 32 knots from the west at the time.

It is strange that it did not turn totally upsidedown and the hull in the water does not seem to have totally sunk, even later, although it might have been in shallow waters by then.

Weird!

That is indeed kinda odd! Folks do tend to anchor in awfully close and in very shallow water at Jibbon Beach... it sure looks like that cat is resting on the bottom with the side of his hull. Hard to guess how that happened. It would be useful to learn of the circumstances.

Re: Large Catamaran Flips In Sydney

There's a beached boat in the background, so looks like there may have been a wind event of some sort. I have a feeling that the wind there may have been higher than reported. "About 16 to 32 knots" sounds like it was taken from a forecast.

I have a feeling that as soon as the starboard ama dug in the bottom it was just the right depth to let the wind lever the boat over.

i was out there today - gusts up to 50 kn, had to shorten down to 2 reefs. Average wind 20 kn or so, so one could easily be tricked and overcanvassed. Reefing mistake ?

Per the Facebook post the boat in the background ran aground a few days earlier. It is interesting that there were two mishaps in very close proximity over the course of two or three days.

I've visited that spot a few times. Certainly plenty of water there. There was a front coming through so possibly prefrontal and gusty. Arsenelupiga looks right. Over canvassed. Hope the guys are ok and boats back the right way soon.

Plenty of water if you stay well out from the beach, but a couple of the courtesy moorings are in pretty shallow water, and we've seen some cats anchored inside them, taking advantage of their shallow draft. At the place where the subject cat is stranded, it's obvious that there ain't plenty of water!

Hope that we can find out what really happened.

Re: Large Catamaran Flips In Sydney

Say some Hollywood producer asks you for technical advice on how to make a large cat stand up on one hull as shown in the facebook pic.
How could it be done deliberately?
Not to flip it, but to balance it as shown.
