Erie Canal Free this Year
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — State officials have announced the opening date for the New York State Canal System, which will be free for recreational boaters this year.
The state Canal Corp. says the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals will open at 10 a.m. May 19 for the 2017 navigation season.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the start of the construction of the Erie Canal in Rome in central New York. Work began on the 363-mile long waterway on July 4, 1817. The canal was officially opened in Buffalo on Oct. 26, 1825 by Gov. DeWitt Clinton.
State officials say to commemorate the bicentennial there will be no tolls or fees for recreational use of the canal system this year.
The canal system's navigational season typically closes in the fall.

Good to know, thanks! Though I can't entirely trust anything the govt. says is "free". Sadly.

This is probably the real thing. They've done it before. Add to this the fact that you can tie up overnight at many of the lock walls and town terminal walls for free, and it's a great deal.
I think Canada is doing the same thing with the Chambly, so you can go all the way up to the St. Lawrence for nothing this year. IIRC, Canada is still charging to tie up to the walls though.

In recognition of Canada's 150th birthday, Parks Canada has decided to waive the fees for LOCKAGE on the Parks Canada Heritage Canal System. This includes the Trent-Severn Canal, the Rideau Canal, the Carillon Canal, the Saint-Anne-de-Bellevue Canal, the Lachine Canal, the Saint-Ours Canal and the Chambly Canal. Mooring fees and electricity fees still need to be paid.
For more information, contact parkscanada.gc.ca/canals or phone 1-888-773-8888.

Re: Erie Canal Free this Year
As a South African having done the Erie canals, my advice is DO IT.!! Even if you have to pay, the charges are minimal and just think of the infrastructure and maintenance costs you're getting for a few bucks. If the canals are not supported they will become unviable, and may even close to recreational boaters ( prolly are already unviable and being supported by the American tax-payer ), but the trip is stunning, amazing, great fun, and while you're about it, - carry on around the whole loop.!!! Why Not.!!!

Every once and a while the universe provides. After crossing our wake in West Palm Beach, accidentally completing the Loop (a long story since our Loop also included Cuba, Haiti, the DR and Puerto Rico), we are ready to get back to the Great Lakes. Too hot down south. Our itinerary will take us up the US east coast, Hudson River and the Champlain canal and on to the St Lawrence. Thanks to our home state of NY for making the trip a little more enjoyable. And congrats on 200 years!

Congratulations on completing the loop! More and more people are doing it, but it still takes a lot of dedication and years to complete. Did you go around Africa or use the Suez?
