Expected costs of a 9 year old Lagoon 400

Hi everyone,

I just found a nice 2010 Lagoon 400 with Ac,generator,Ray marine electronics, water maker but I did not arrange the survey yet because I read a lot about which parts may have to be changed for a 10 year old boat , I am just confused.. Almost everything on the boat is original and seems good but if it turns into a money pit I can not afford it or at least it will not be sustainable.
I want to hear your experiences buying a 10 year old Lagoon.

Thanks,

Re: Expected costs of a 9 year old Lagoon 400

Except for the engine almost everything on a boat has a 10yr life expectancy!

I bought a refurbished boat with almost everything new and in 10 years I replaced almost everything but the engine and generator...sails, watermaker, pumps, heads, rigging, roller furlers...not a lagoon but a boat that I used full time.

If so, may I ask why did you buy a 10 year old boat? If you add the number you spend for the repairs and new parts to the purchase amount ,would it cost more to buy a new one?
I just made a list of the parts which may need change in 10 years time and 2010 Lagoon ,he asks for 250.000€ and I offered 200.000€ , I think we may deal somewhere in the middle and I still may have a room to spend another 100.000€ to refit. So it would cost me at least around 320.000€?? Isn't that too much?? Who would ever pay me that amount if I wish to sell it after 5 years?I would be lucky to sell it for 175.000€.

Those are ridiculous estimates, a ten year old boat should be fine unless it suffers from Charter Overuse and Abuse Syndrome. Don’t expect the previous owner to buy you all new stuff.

Why do you think so ? We are trying to make estimates and did you read what s/v Moondancer says? Isnt that a fact?
If this is ridiculous, what do you think of common saying that you may spend %10 of the purchase each year for maintenance?
We should make estimations which may have %5 room to be false but otherwise we may be broke one day and have to sell our boat for nothing.

Equipment that needs replacement @ 10 years is either inferior or has not been maintained, unless subjected to commercial abuse.

No its not a “fact.” Unless the boat is a real used-up POS at only nine years old, your estimate is very high. IMO, having purchased three boats over the past 10 years... each one was about ten years old at the time.

And like I wrote earlier, don’t expect the previous owner to be buying you all new stuff to your liking by discounting the price of the boat further to accomodate your preferences.

Those estimates in the previous post are just plain ridiculous, you have a lot to learn.

Of course I will not ask the owner if he would buy everything new but I am afraid to spend all this money afterwards.

If spending money scares you... you probably shouldn’t be looking at buying a boat. IMHO.

That list is insane!!! Rewire entire boat??? @ 15 years??? For only &5k?

That’s the most glaring error, but also “replace spars”. @20 yrs? What?

Re: Expected costs of a 9 year old Lagoon 400

I think the OP and several responders are all too extreme. It depends on current condition, wants, and how you expext to use the boat. Get a survey. Figure out any extras you want immediately. If you are cruising full time your replacement costs will be 10 times higher than if you are daysailing with rhe occasional week or three for six months a year. Also, most of those cost estimates anticipate yard work not diy. On rhe other hand, boats are generally a luxury item, not an investment.

Re: Expected costs of a 9 year old Lagoon 400

On a 10yr boat id replace the standing rigging and seacocks if cheap brass, sails if needed, running rigging, carry some spares. Sorry but youd need to be a complete fool to spend 100k on upgrading a 10yr old boat.
