USB GPS Antenna with OpenCPN?

Anyone know if a standard GPS Antenna such as the
Zenstar III GPS Receiver With USB Connector

WAAS / EGNOS enabled

Powered directly from the laptop or PC's USB port

will work with OpenCPN. Also if a Garmin handheld with UPS adapter can plug in.

This.

I got mine on Ebay for $20 with shipping. Came with a driver CD as well. My only complaint is the cord length but a USB extension cable did the trick.

The latest drivers are located online but are a bit difficult to navigate through as there are several models based on the Chipset and the maker is in China.

No complaints after 2 years of brutal use.

Edit: Looks like they updated their webpage and its in English!
Drivers look easy to get now.

I have been using and selling this hocky puck for several years. My only complaint is that there is little or no buffering or averaging of the signal so your instantaneous COG and SOG can vary quite a bit. But they are good value devices. Buy them on eBay from Taiwan.

Perhaps we can get OpenCPN to address this small issue?

It works with my Garmin 62 via USB and Garmin Spanner (note I believe spanner will not run on W7, mine is XP)
An old Garmin 45 also works with a serial to USB adapter.

Yep, it works fine. I'm using the Zenstar III w/ USB on my net book. I updated the driver from the web, loaded it up and have no problems with it.

Hi I have the Zenstart III but can not locate drivers for Windows 8.

Anyone have a link where I can download from?
Thanks

Bu 353 GPS Receiver
Hello,
My name is Leo Lotowycz sailing out of Venice Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. I am setting up opencpn in my Pearson 35 which I have totally rebuilt.
Was wondering if that GPS receiver will work at my navigation station below deck or has to be above deck exposed to the sky.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely
Leo

Yes, it will work inside any fiberglass boat under most circumstances. Of course the higher and farther from possible sources of interference it is the better.

Re: USB GPS Antenna with OpenCPN?

Hello Leo
I am in Palmetto just north of you.
I no longer use my antenna as I purchased a Lowrance Plotter with a built in antenna.
I will be flying home for a few days returning around Feb 25.
I could bring it back with me if you were interested in trying and perhaps buying it.
Best Bob

Re: USB GPS Antenna with OpenCPN?

Noobie question:

Is there a current favorite between BU-353 S4 or VK172 based GPS for a Win10 Tablet for OpenCPN?

Thanks!
