Catching Dinner in Asia or the Pacific

Hey all....

We are currently planning on heading to Bali next month for holiday. We hunt and love to catch dinner when we dive. I couldn't find much information on lobster diving or spear fishing in SE Asia on the internet, except that some areas it is strictly verboten. I haven't tried calling any of the dive shops yet.

We just came back from a fun and productive trip to Florida where it was legal to lobster and spearfish. (esp the invasive lion fish) We were hoping to find some area in Asia, or even the North or South Pacific where we can do same. Emphasis is on bug diving as we don't have a penchant for ciguatera.

I know I'm covering a HUGE area, but we are flexible and able to travel anywhere in the region next month. As I mentioned, we will be starting our travels in Indonesia

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You talking just for your personal consumption while sailing?

The locals there pay little to no attention to such issues.

Lobsters pretty thin on the ground out there 8-)

Yes. To us, part of the fun of being out on the water.

Any laws are there to make foreign govs/ngo's happy, enforcement only done to extract bribes.

Crikes the local navy guys partner with fishing operations that use actual slave labor, sell them the refugees they catch, any squeaky wheels get tossed to the sharks.

So just do it, educate yourself about what's endangered and follow your own conscience, will be far beyond responsible compared to the actual local practices.

Not quite. It is legal to do both, if and only if you have a license and it is in season and you follow size and bag limits for each species. On lionfish you get a pass, but that's probably the only species most states follow that policy with.
FWC have a reputation for vigorous enforcement, but some years ago one NYS DEC officer set a new standard for lobster licensing. He confiscated "all equipment involved in the infraction" and reputedly left one diver standing in the parking lot in his underwear, holding his citation.
When in doubt...try to find the actual regulations on a national web site for each jurisdiction. Many are rather protective of native fishing rights.

A friend of mine got around the regulations prohibiting "landing" of various shellfish one year by just having scallop sushi while he was still in the water. Perfectly legal that way. He'd read the rules.

Re: Catching Dinner in Asia or the Pacific

If you come by Australia be aware that each state has it's own laws and regulations which are enforced with varying degrees of viciousness and that the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland has numerous marine parks wherein allowed fishing activities vary considerably. Fortunately it is all fairly well organised and the rules and areas they apply to are well defined on charts and leaflets freely available at no cost from the various fishery departments and fishing gear stores.

The up side of all the official attention to allowable activities and bag limits is that if you know what you are doing you can pretty well subsist on marine edibles and frozen green peas around the entire coast of Australia and up it's rivers.
