Cape Horn water maker Installation

I am just about to install Spectra Cape Horn on board, I have picked a position for the Feed pumps down in bilge area close to the sea water intake, the Clark pump I would like to install near the water tanks which is up high close to the main bulkhead, it would mean that there would be approx 3.5 meters hose run between feed pumps and the clark pump and membrane unit, I have not seen in the Installation guide I have regarding distance between the two, anyone able to help?

As long as you have adequate feed water flow and pressure to the Clark pump, there shouldn't a problem.

That's actually not that long of a distance and it will work fine. Getting the two feed pump close or below the waterline is more critical.

With all humble and due respect to both you and Spectras tech help, the advice given doesn't reach all the people who view the OPs question on CF, which at this time is over 225 views. Also, someone who has installed and serviced hundreds of Cape Horn Extreme's over the past decade plus is not such a bad source of accurate and experienced information.

Be aware that you'll need to install one of the scoop type, strainer though hull fittings with the scoop facing forward in order to prevent feed pump cavitation.

Thanks for the understanding and compliment Alansmith and it did not come off wrong at all and I enjoy your contributions to CF as well. I wasn't sure how MY post was going to be received. It was purely meant to point out that I'm usually always here to help answer any questions. It was tough for me to word properly in my attempt to not come across as either being snippy, arrogant, or rude. I think/know tech support at Spectra is great, their after market service is next to none, always has been. But there, in my mind, is a significant difference between tech support and field experience. Sometimes what looks great in the manual and spec sheets doesn't meet real world applications. Jean is the new tech support person at Spectra. She has been there a little over a year now and has done a great job in that short amount of time. In fact I state that she has been better at the job than the five men that held that position before her. All of whom I still know and talk to, and who I will have to buy copious amounts of beer for when they read that.

Hi Tellie
Another question regarding installation of cape horn, I have just realized the brine discharge outlet the ship yard has installed is 1/2 inch, I know the brine discharge is supposed to be 5/8, do you think 1/2" on the discharge would be too small?

This is Gary on Meshugah. You may recall that we were neighbours in Port Douglas for some time. I'm curious to know why you decided on a Cape Horn water maker. I have been looking to install a water maker myself and note that the Cape Horn is about $13,500 retail here in AUS. That's about double what a Sydney manufactured Rainman 12VDC water maker would cost.

I have noted however that there is a huge difference in efficiency: Rainman 12VDC produces 26-34 lph using 400W i.e. approx. 13 Watts per litre, whereas the Spectra Cape Horn yields 53 lph using 228W i.e. approx. 4.3 Watts per litre.

A big difference in efficiency and in price.

$13,500 for a Cape Horn Extreme? Wow! I could put you into a Spectra New Port 700 MKII for that. I'm on the wrong side of the world for pricing. Come to S. Florida (after Irma) and I'll come close to half of $13,500 for a Cape Horn Extreme. Cheaper to fly here, have a week vacation, pick up a Cape horn Extreme and fly home with it.
