Novice Question/Yanmar 4JHE & Pump Oil

So I've read the entire manual, have basic mech skills, and want to do some maintenance on the fuel injector. How do you know what type oil to use? And how much? There is a large oil intake cap, plus a small screw marked "oil." Is it like a driveshaft, where you add oil until it reaches the slanted intake? Does the small screw marked "oil" require lube oil instead?

Sadly, none of this information is in the manual.

Just checked my manual. You're right. NADA.

I have another manual which says that in regards to injectors etc. contact Yanmar distributor.

I doubt if the Yanmar website will be very helpful. I've tried there before, and gotten nothing.

Best bet is to contact the distributor and ask if they are willing to send you their service bulletins

MY BAD! Toldya I was a novice. I meant the injector PUMP. Not the injector's themselves. Thanks for your help!

Hi Formrteki. I have the same engine. The injector pump is a little bit tricky. The manual does tell how to remove it but only with the front cover of the engine taken off. Unless you are pretty knowledgable there isn't much in the injection pump that a mechanic can do. They are usually taken to an injection shop. I had an intermitent problem with my injection Pump. There are no problems, I just want to ensure that the proper oil level is in the pump. There is no dipstick, and when the large yellow cap is removed I can't tell whether I need to add oil. I also don't know what type to add. So nothing is wrong, I don't want to remove the beast, just feed it. Thanks for your help!

The IP is oiled internally from the normal oil lubrication so when you check your oil in the engine this should be sufficient.

so why do they have that extra fill cap on the IP? just to check it? (weird - seems like an unnecessary place dust/dirt could get into a high-tolerance and expensive part, if it doesn't need oil there)

did this question ever get answered? I am similarly curious

the IP gear and flywheel on my 4JHE look dry when I remove the filler cap

(haven't run the engine in a while - drydock)

it makes sense lube would be from the sump - idiot factor

but again why the 2nd fill cap? is it more of a viewing port to adjust timing?

just veified with a local Yanmar tech:

the 4JH series IP is indeed sump-lubed

the extra oil cap is just another place you can add oil (if, for example, it's easier to get at the side engine than the top, in your particular boat)

I don't know, can't prove anyway, but would bet money that the second cap is there for mounting options, meaning that maybe in a John Deere tractor or something, the hood is too close to the engine to use the top cap, so you use the side one. Maybe in some boats too.
On mine, it's more convenient to use the side one and sometimes I even remember to
