Big boat rebuild (fun thread)

It's Christmas and sorta slow so here is something to ponder. Topper Hermanson island cargo 65, st marys ga, google it. Just musing here but I wonder about this vessel. Anyone know anything about the builder? It's a bruce Roberts design I guess. She is a big ol' gal. Looks like a motivated builder could make a heck of a liveaboard....or something out of it.

Re: Big boat rebuild (fun thread)

You might check out this sailing blog ...

YACHT "WANDERING STAR": The Boat

They own and live aboard a Topper Hermanson 44, and have a nice
blog on their experiences.

Good luck with this one ... seems it is aluminum. Keep your pennies in your pocket (else they will eat a hole in the hull).

Re: Big boat rebuild (fun thread)

Never been sailed or rigged. Wonder why...maybe because it's not sea worthy? Rolls badly?

Re: Big boat rebuild (fun thread)

Right after WWII there was a lot of aircraft aluminum available cheap. Several small boat builders made some small boats that lasted 5-10 years. Where I grew up there were several on mudflats corroding away. By 1970 they were only memories.
Re: 65 foot - lots of these project boats around. Building a boat or just finishing out are hundreds or thousands of hours. Most people have no idea of the time required. Many are old guys like me that finally can afford to build their dream boat, but end up puttering around, getting little done.

True, while not as sexy or adventurous there is quite a bit of fulfillment found in the puttering. My dad retired at 56 and he has been happily puttering around for almost 30 years now. There is a certain amount of serenity and nobleness about it.

I could be wrong but I recall Topper Hermanson built Beth and Evan's Hawk.
