Trimaran wit "equal" hulls
"Classic" trimaran design means one "big" hull and two smaller side hulls. As far as I know, if designed properly, it performs better than comparable catamaran.
What about this design - three hulls somewhat "equal"? There are obvious advantages - more space in side hulls (even though less space in center hull, I guess), can be easily beached (I know, some "classic" tri, like Neel 45, also can be beached, but anyway).
What about performance? How it would perform comparing, say, to similar sized "classic" tri? Or to mainstream catamaran?

Re: Trimaran wit "equal" hulls
Looks like a cat with a centre nacelle taken to extremes.
Prout tried it years ago
I'd imagine that with those three hulls so close together, slamming would be a real problem.

Re: Trimaran wit "equal" hulls
With all that space, it will end up horribly overloaded and will slam like a bitch.
Nice and roomy in a marina though.
There are good reasons why nobody makes boats like this.

There's plenty of barges like that out there. You should not expect stellar performance, but you can carry a lot of crap!

Re: Trimaran wit "equal" hulls
The problem with your question is defining what a similar size tri or cat is.
- If you are talking pure length based comparison, I would expect this to be the slowest of the three options but with a slight bit more space than the cat and lots more space than the traditional tri.
- If you are talking interior living space, the cat will be slightly longer and have a performance edge. The tri might be 50% or more longer and not really comparable.
I'm not sure about the slamming concern expressed by others. My understanding is the nacelle was originally added to eliminate slamming.

Re: Trimaran wit "equal" hulls
A tri is better than a cat? In what way, certainly not speed.

If you can find a marina to accommodate that beam or a boat yard. It looked good till the balsa core.

Re: Trimaran wit "equal" hulls
We have a 38' 1997 Hostsman Tristar we love for the space and speed. The down side is that with 3 hulls its is harder to come about. The last owner added two fin rudders at the end of each ama added which really helps. We have had her up to 12 knots in 20 knot winds. One more thing, we looked for a long time for a boat that was professionally built.

Definitely speed and sea worthiness due to the center of gravity. But to each his own. Interior space generally stinks, finding a slip or haul out is a bitch.

I know it's hard to compare apples to oranges. What I mean - comparable length boats of same category - cruising boats, for example. not performance or racing.

And the single inboard Perkins. Hate to try turning that hard in a marina
