Treasure Hunting [Abacos]

hi all.

I'm filming a new show via my 31' sailboat for my nephew who's battling leukemia. it's called 'Treasures for Gaige' [his name] and I've already shot quite a bit in Nassau, Grand Bahamas and here in Green Turtle Cay; 'finding' clues that will take me all the way through the Bahamas - giving him a little something to watch daily, as well as sneaking in some culture and snacks.

what I'm asking for is interesting little spots in the area [all of Abacos, from Treasure Cay down south to the tip] - be them ruins, spots for finding animals [see: swimming pigs], historically important spots [not too nerdy, he's only 6] and more.

[beaches are great, but they're quickly becoming redundant.]

any ideas welcome! and thanks in advance.

I have no help at all to offer, but wanted to say that it's an awesome thing you're doing for him!

Treasure Hunting [Abacos]

Surfing, rock climbing and caving in Eleuthera come to mind.

Definitely diving with sharks.

Make sure to visit the Rocky Dundas in the Exumas.

How about a local sailing regatta on one of the islands?

Hope Town lighthouse is very picturesque. Bet you could work that into the plot.

Man o War and the local boat building could be cool.

Great project.

PS
I don't think Eleuthera is in the Abacos.

Little Harbor is a neat stop and the back story of the artist and his family that settled there is interesting to learn. A small gallery there run by his family still sells and displays his work which some consider to be treasures.

There is a lot of history to abaco. Just north of treasure cay beach is sand bank where the first settlers landed. Also there is a blue hole or sink where settlers obtained fresh water. Close to green turtle dock on abaco. Very interesting to visit. Search " blue holes abaco". Try friends of the enviroment or parks national trunst in marxh harbour for addition info and history.
Abaco parrots are unique and can ven seen in southern abaco. On man-o-war cay is albury boat works famous for making boats for many generations and still do.
Just south of marsh harbour is a deep water port that was developed by owen corning, chicago. They started farming and sugar plantations on abaco and left in mid 50's.

There is information at the treasure cay library including books on early history of abaco.

Green turtle was the commerce centre at one time and Lord Chamberlaine visited and had a form of residence in the late 30's. Closely connected to Britian.

Great time to be in Abaco, you are close to being one of the few boaters left 😁

If you are heading south then as someone already mentioned there are caves to visit on Eleuthera. Caves are always good for mystery and pirate stuff.

Re: Treasure Hunting [Abacos]

Hi, Odyssey,

I know of some ruins. My boyfriend and I tried to get to them (off Bimini) earlier this month, but all plans fell apart. We want to get back there. Is that too far? We could possibly "book you" to help us. We've been studying them using satellite imaging and want to see up close. My best to your nephew. Beautiful project.

Re: Treasure Hunting [Abacos]

appreciate the note and offer! unfortunately, I'm headed towards Eleuthera this coming weekend and further south [hurricane season and all. ha.], but let me know if you find anything... and if you have treasure hunting tips for him re: satellite imagery! sounds super cool.

Re: Treasure Hunting [Abacos]

There are a couple of small shallow caves facing east on the knolls between Matt Lowe's Cay and Great Abaco. We climbed up to these many years ago, but carefully avoided disturbing the vultures that were roosting there. These little caves always intrigued me.

There are no signs or structures on these little island outcrops. I have no knowledge of their ownership or posting.
