Question 1987 Carver 42 Cockpit

Anyone have this model, or around this year model? Any inherent problems they've been known for?

Were jet propulsion engines common in this era of motor yachts? I looked up the registration on it, and its registered as having jet propulsion. Engines are 454 gas as well.

I may have an opportunity coming forward to obtain one for a little more than a few months back slip rent.

ETA: I think its actually a 4207

Registration is incorrect. These were standard 454 (7.4) Big blocks. Jet Propulsion is a mistake on the registration.

Jet drives not jet engines, maybe?

Yeah. I know it has 454 gas engines in it, but were jet drives common back then?

I did a quick look up on NADA, and it did give jet drives as an option.

Jet drives are less efficient. Way back then for shallow running Penn Yan tunnel drives were the ticket.
Boat that size and you just bump bottom with your props and it costs thousands to fix, so you don't want to bump

Jet drives were never an option on that boat, Must be a mistake in the listing. It will be straight inboards, probably with a 1-3:4" shaft.

Re: 1987 Carver 42 Cockpit

I think your information is incorrect and don't believe Carver made a 42 cockpit in 1987. The model 4207 was an aft cabin motor yacht without a cockpit. There was a 41 cockpit, I believe.

Neither had a jet drive option and if the boat you are considering is in fact jet drive, then someone did a lot of modifications to the hull and machinery. Both boats should have had 454s amidships, under the cabin sole. That is a long reach to the transom for a jet drive.

Jet drives were only common on small boat and megayachts.

I know it was built in 1986 for the 1987 year. And I know its an aft cabin. The rear of it is basically a wall. There is a swim platform but its only accessible by crawling down the rear vertical ladder. Which is why I believe its a 4207. The 4227 I believe had the aft deck that had the sliding doors on it. The helm is above, center ship, and is enclosed with canvas and vinyl windows. The aft deck over the master state room has a hard top.

I may have picked up the word 'cockpit' off of a yachtworld ad or something.

The reliability of almost 30 year old gas engines is slim and none. The fuel cost on a pair of 454s, if you could keep them running, is nuts. In my opinion this is only good for a dock queen.

Yeah. Lots of opinions on gas vs diesel. I've found information that says rebuilt gas engines can be had for about $3k each. And new ones look to be about $6K.

When it comes down to decision time I'll have to way all of the pros and cons of the boat I'm looking at and go from there.

+1 Agreed! Those engines on that boat will absolutely melt your credit card. Buy it and you will soon discover why it's sitting somewhat neglected at the dock.

Well, it isn't neglected. I can't go into details just yet, but considering its age it's still in great condition.

But this is my question, if you had the opportunity to get into a boat like this for an obsurdly good price, would you? I'm talking like $30k or more under book value.

Sorry, didn't mean neglected as in derelict; more like sitting with unpaid dockage due to owner not being able to afford to run it.

To answer your question, no, I wouldn't because I simply could not afford to run it like I would want to. I would have to run it like a displacement at 6 or so knots and I would have a real hard time keeping my hands off the throttle.

I almost bought a Mainship 34 with twin 454's and the 1.2 hour roundtrip from seller's house to haul out in Tarpon Springs cost $200 in fuel. In fairness some of that time was running WOT for the surveyor. I remember standing at the rear with the surveyor looking at the beautiful white and blue churned up water from being "at speed". Surveyor said "Beautiful isn't it? Enjoy it now because most can't afford to see it that often!"

Re: 1987 Carver 42 Cockpit

454's are only good for dock queens? Incredibly ignorant. As has been explained before if you are planning long range trips go diesel. If you are into short trips and just want to get on the water and enjoy life go gasoline. Diesels will cost more and the rebuild is more expensive. I'm having a blast enjoying the Fla keys and Biscayne with my gas engines. Don't listen to the diesel blowhards. My boat also was a bargain and I'm on the water not dreaming about a boat.
