... can not say for sure but 46-42N 034-17W is way off the Azores and as they know the approx. position it looks more like another (abandoned?) vessel.

The OP posting says the boat went missing July 16, a month and a half ago, and the "found" boat is current date. Could it have drifted that far in that amount of time?

Currents are wrong for that.. it would drift S and E in all likelyhood and I don't believe there have been any strong prolonged S'lies to drift her that far N.

Re: Overdue RED HEOL sailing between Portugal and Azores

From Hisse et oh forum:

Over that time period, from a position somewhat east of the Azores to the reported sighting is about 650 miles which equates to a drift of about .6 knots so I would judge it entirely likely. Doesn't sound to promising to me.

FWIW...

From Hisse and oh forum:

Hello everyone
Jo's boat was positioned on Sunday by a merchant ship to 750MN east of Newfoundland and 500 NM north of the Azores.
The position shown on the message of "fonsin" which is derived from the Canadian equivalent of the French CROSS
"Sailboat Wreck 10m, yellow shell drifting near the position 46-42N 034-17W"
The ship could not make an intervention on the boat, the conditions on zone being too harsh.
The boat is still sailing despite his torn GV.
No intervention can be programmed prior to September 2 (best condition on zone) and looking for a ship that can divert.
I shall tell you later
Thank you all for your support
LE GOFF Jean-Yves

Note: "
Skipper of the original report is Joseph Le Goff.
This message says "Jo's boat" and is also signed by someone named "Le Goff".
So apparently, it is the same boat and they are tracking it, hoping to get a ship to it.

I suspect it is signed by his brother. No word on the fate of the sailor.

GV = Grande-Voile = main sail.

So it sounds as though the boat still has sails up - that might explain how it ended up so far north west.
