Re: Panama to La Paz ,Mexico

We did this trip in reverse a few years ago.

May I suggest you go online and purchase the two cruising guides by Eric and Sherrill of Sarana? The guides are updated every year and by far the best available for this stretch of coastline up to the Mexican border. For $18 bucks it's well worth every penny

Good luck

I do know that you are supposed to check into Costa Rico to get fuel, which is a PITA. I just flagged down a fishing boat and made a deal.

The wind can be pretty light until you get to Papagayo area, then keep one hull on the beach. Ditto for the Tehuantepec.

I wonder about that. In Golfito they fuel up all kinds of things. US Navy, fishing boats, sail boats anything that pulls up to the dock.

Well the fuel dock in El Salvador is easy peasy but crossing the bar is not, so ask for a guide over it. Once there, the marina bar is great.

Get yourself a sailing boat - the fuel lasts a lot longer!

Re: Panama to La Paz ,Mexico

For your destination in Mexico, Latitude 38 does a big rally, the Baha haha to Mexico every year and they have lots of great discussions online of Mexico issues including the crackdown a few years ago that caused panic among boat owners and other new topics

Here is their guide

For Mexico customs advice, Tere Grossman, President of the Mexican Marina Owners Association. They also own/run the San Carlos Marina.

Re: Panama to La Paz ,Mexico

In places like CR, you can do all the running around to check in and I don't believe they ever look at your boat. In Nicaragua you pretty much stay on the boat in the marina until everybody shows up from the city. They actually hang out down below for a while. This is a good adventure for them to get out of the office. Good entrance from the sea, up a river a little bit, nice marina and sea side Palapa bar but nothing else. If you are up for an adventure, you could catch a bus from there.

Re: Panama to La Paz ,Mexico

We left Panama in July, now in Acapulco. Fuel at La Playita by jug, Golfito CR, Quepos, Marina Papagayo, Bahia del Sol (El Salvador), Puerto Madero (Mexico), Bahia Santa Cruz. All the later stops were fuel docks. Only Santa Cruz required a fender board. Details are on our blog as far as Mexico: The Owl and the Pussycat
Any questions, please ask.
