Lagoon 380 vs Lagoon 410 Pros and Cons

I am considering the purchase of a Lagoon 380 or 410. The primary use will be cruising the Caribbean as a full-time live-aboard couple for "as long as it's fun". Is the engine access on a Lagoon 410 a problem because the engines are under the bunks? The access on a 380 looks much more convenient from the transom steps. Also is the headroom above the bunks much different? Instead of fore and aft facing bunks like on the 380, the 410 has bunks at 90 degrees to the hulls. Is this a major drawback? The galley looks larger on the 410 and the increased waterline should help it perform better under sail. By the way, my budget is up to $250k, so I am considering 10 year old boats, and having a hard time finding a Lagoon 380 S2 owner's version that has never been chartered. Thanks for your comments.

Engine access on the 410 is not an issue. There is ample room for normal maintenance tasks. You just need to be careful with oil, grease, collant etc. The only problem is that in case you need a mechanic these folks run through your living room to work in your bedroom. These folks rarely have clean hands and never clean up afterwards. So do everything yourself if you can.

If you really need to take out an engine thats not a big deal. There are access panelsin the hull, you just take of the ceiling liners and cut away the sealant around the panel to open it.
Preparation and cleanup takes a caring owner half a day but taking out the engine is easy.
We had it done and it was a non-event.

The bunks were OK for us, YMMV.
Galley and salon are certainly larger on a 410. The cockpit is much bigger and better layed out than a 380. Cabins are roughly the same but the head on the 2-head layout of the 410 is way more comfortable than the head on a normal charter layout ofthe 380.

Quoting myself from another thread ....

There is no diesel smell in the cabin, and the noise of the engine running is muffled by the insulation and thick matresses. My partner finds she can still sleep with it running. But when motoring for extended times I usually run on just one engine anyway, thus entirely eliminating that issue.

Access is easy. The bedding is 2 separate foam matresses. I remove the pillows, then fold one matress over the other, keeping the bedding intact, then carry the folded bundle out of the cabin. I use straps to keep the assembly as a bundle. Takes only a minute and just as easy to put back. For checking the oil, just fold one matress over the other ... no need to remove.

Sure it would be better at times not to disturb my partner, but that is offset by the ability to work in the protected environment inside. Rainy days are perfect times to do those queued maintenance tasks.

Which is better? For me, it's not enough of an issue to make or break the decision on which boat to buy.
Also, the 380 rudder is in front of the prop so manouverability is reduced a bit - again not enough of an issue to be a deal breaker.

Thanks for your replies! I'm glad to hear that the engines under the bunks are not a deal breaker!

Re: Lagoon 380 vs Lagoon 410 Pros and Cons

We had the exact same situation - 380 vs 410 and a $250 budget for the Caribbean for a 10 year old boat. We spent time with people who had 380s and when we saw our first 410, we were amazed at the extra space, room and feel.
So we went with a 2005 410 for $295 - never chartered owners version. She's in great shape with lots of goodies, but truly MUCH more overall living and storage space, a MUCH larger galley, plus a dedicated freezer and fridge.
No regrets in spending the extra money to get much more boat.

I owned the 380 and still own my 410 change engine on both cat easier on the 380 but you don't change engine everyday!!!
410 is 20 to 25% faster under sail & engine. more room inside outside and more comfortable at sea
38 is a great cat but if you have the budget go for the 410.

Re: Lagoon 380 vs Lagoon 410 Pros and Cons

I've sailed both. The 410 has more room but the 380 has a better use of space. The 380 has a great owner suite better than the 410 in my opinion. The space seemed to work better. The 410 has a larger galley.

The 410 is a little faster. The 410 better sea motion but slaps more due to the flat surface under the aft berths. The 380 cheaper on fuel.

Both fun boats. I would probably pick a 410 if the price was close, especially if sailing with larger groups.

Cheers!

Re: Lagoon 380 vs Lagoon 410 Pros and Cons

Some additional thoughts to maybe consider:

our 380's walk and sit on hard bimini with beautifully integrated lighting and sliding helmsman's opening (not available from Lagoon for the 410, as far as I know) appears like something very desirable to me in tropical conditions, compared to canvas solutions. Especially together with a decent awning all around.

Galley sink and stove both oriented towards the cockpit behind a sliding window can't be beaten in terms of socializing with the cook, and be it from the helm only...

And not sure about the Caribbean, but in the Med, staying under 12m (instead of just slightly above) is quite a difference in running costs... In Spain, they've even invented an additional tax for all boats longer than 12m.

Plus I've found several Travellifts already where only our 380's beam could juuuust be squeezed in...

There is a thread on CF about a hardtop bimini for the 410. Wasn't too expensive.

Galley in 410 S2 is the same layout as the 380

Fully agree on the running cost & travel lift issue but I think this is limited to the Med.

All 410-S2 I know have the stove deep in the cabin on the starboard side...
Lagoon even added an overhead hatch to allow for some ventilation.

Here's the 380 layout:

you are right! Sink and counter space is at the door like the 380, but the oven is starboard.
