Do Not Miss Places when in Bermuda

Hi All,

Good LORD willing and the boat floats well, I am heading for Bermuda May 15th. Since I haven't been there prior, anyone out there with first hand experiences....

Any special places that I should see or go before leaving for home?

Dining out suggestions?

Any touristy things like "Kissing a Blarney stone" to look forward to?

Or on the other side of it, any place I should be wary of?

Dockyards is interesting, There are an interesting grotto to see and the beaches are great if you like beaches. The restaurants on the quay in St Georges are all fine.

And don't forget. The Quicky Licky Laundry!

Do not forget to visit the "Bermuda Weather Stone" it is at Fort Scaur...a very unusual limestone formation with peculiar qualities.

Ahh, never heard of it. "Peculiar qualities?" Would you prefer I be surprised or could you define that a bit for me? Sounds like a stop though.

I recognize Bermuda is only about 1/3 the size of Washington, D.C. but time there is limited to a few days. By gaining local knowledge from those who have gone before us our time in Bermuda can be used to the max.

Really I appreciate (for "real") the input of any one contributing.

Go straight to a proper station and buy a bus and ferry pass for the time you are there. You can then enjoy all aspects of the island that are worth enjoying. One aspect that isn't is the driving. All the batteries from all the wars, the interpretive centres, and as suggested, the King's Dockyard. I'd go to the Black Horse Tavern, or is it the White Horse Tavern? Oh heck, go to both!

I would try to get to the Dinghy Club and find out what is going on. I have found the members and visitors quite friendly. In 2004, we tried their Dark and Stormy drink - still a favourite with us.

Do you already have the Bermuda charts? If you don't, I have some brand new paper charts I'll sell for a reasonable price. (I was planning on going in June, but now I'm not.)

Now, that's good info! I have heard of the "Dark and Stormy" before. I'll try a few first, then authorize the crew (In order to protect them of course).

Triton318, I do have the paper charts already. The Bermudian courtesy flag was just delivered by UPS today. I bought it on the net from "Landfall". Thanks for the offer anyhow.

CONDITION OF STONE = FORECAST
Stone is wet = Raining
Stone is dry = Not raining
Stone casts shadow = Sunny
White on top = Frosty
Can't see stone = Foggy
Swinging stone = Very windy
Bottom of stone wet = Very high tide or flood
Stone swinging or gone = Hurricane or Tornado
etc...

Aha! My suspicions were correct on the weather stone!

I saw a similar stone (no doubt from the same quarry), in a Delaware campground a while back.
Just the same, it is great for a laugh. If I have the occasion to snap a picture, when I am there, I'll post it; providing of course it is still operationally fit.

Gunpowder Cavern....if it is still in operation.....

There is an unusual plant on the island with a unique characteristic....it is legal.
ask around when you get there.

OH, ad if you rent a moped....you go left into the roundabouts....

Finally ( and this almost ended my first visit) check traffic before crossing.
I almost got Pranged by a lorry....when I had just gotten off the boat (literally)

We were in Bermuda last March and two free things to do that were great: The Bagpipers at the Fort in Hamilton...I think it was at noon plus the fort is really interesting also. Then at 3 or 4 in the afternoon gumbay (sp.) dancers perform in the cruise terminal on the waterfront. They were amazing. We ate at lots of great restaurants. We had breakfast at the Lighthouse above the Princess twice. Great view and very unique. Enjoy!
