Lagoon 380 - Performance tips

Hello,

We are new owners of a Lagoon 380, it's our first boat so I apologies if some of the questions I ask seem a little (or a lot) stupid!

I am looking for advise / pointers from other L380 owners on how to get the best performance to windward, or in fact any other relevant tips to maximise sailing performance!?

I appreciate any advise that other owners can offer,

Not a L380 owner, but two suggestions anyway.

Keep it light and don't try to point too high.

I have made a concerted effort to move as much weight aft as possible, we are now keeping very little in the forward crash lockers.

To ask a silly question: How close to the wind, is too close?

In the experience of other Lagoon 380 owners or sailors how close can you sail to the wind and expect reasonable performance?

Everyone I speak to seems to have a differant opinion here, from 30 degrees to 70 degrees off the wind!!

Given its our first boat I have limited frame of reference to set my expectations.

Hey Jamjar. We own a 380 as well.

I would say 45deg is the max you can get away with. Even then we're down to 4kts.

We've only had our boat for 1.5years and it's been a real joy. It's our first boat as well and the only boat that made me envious was the Outremer 5X docked next to us when we were in Guadeloupe.

It's a true blue water boat and don't let anyone on this forum dissuade you from that. And it sails well. Our fastest speed was 13kts going up the Gulfstream to Miami.

Absolutely forget about 30 degrees, that's dream world. Something closer to 50 degrees is probably more in the ball park. Remember the slower you sail upwind the more leeway you will get. Enjoy your new boat, they are a popular choice.

Basically they sail upwind poorly. If you find an experienced sailor that owns a 380 I will eat my hat! If it's upwind you motor.

The polars for the 380 start at 50 degrees to the TWA, which is normally a little less than the boats best vmg. Below is the polar diagram, which is delineated in TWA, not AWA.

I absolutely love the boat, really pleased with her, and if the cost of the comfortable accommodation is putting up with a little noise and a few degrees when going to windward I can live with that!

We've been sailing our 380 for the past 5 years. We sail her at 40 degrees to the wind easily (no motoring at that). Now that we are live aboard cruising & loaded down, the performance has suffered accordingly, but she still does well enough for us.

As others have said we keep the weight as far to the rear as possible with the water maker in the rear lazarette, gen set extra fuel etc. Golf clubs are on the spare rear berth & all the tools & spares below the rear berths etc. Still the lowest step on the sugar scoop is still above water when boat is at rest.


We sail the coast of Queensland from home up north near Cairns to the Gold Coast down south. Currently in the Whitsundays. Our best SOG has been 12 knots (broad reach) but usually best is more around the 10's. I love the 6 to 9 knot range though.

Sailing upwind in light to moderate I pull the traveller to windward a couple of feet from centre & ease the main sheet a tad. Reaching I tend to sheet the main on more than most & use the traveller to ease & get the correct angle.

Broad reaching, sailing downwind etc I rig a pulley from the middle mooring cleat on the gunnel & run an extra genoa sheet through this to get the sheeting angle out wider. The normal track for the genoa sheet is just way too narrow/inboard to get any decent sheeting angle. It also allows us to run wing on wing with the main easier & more efficiently.

We try to put the first reef in at about 17 to 18 knots depending on angle of sail & second reef anything over 25. The most wind we've sailed in has been around 35, but then we try to avoid bad conditions as much as possible. We're retired & we have time. We cruise to enjoy.

That's is incredibly helpful and exactly the type of suggestions I was originally looking for!

I love the video, your in a beautiful part of the world there and I'm not jealous... much!!

Interesting idea on the using the block to widen the angle of the Genny, I hadn't thought of that... I will have to measure up as my Genoa looks to be cut quite small.

That is definitely better jib shape than mine Do you tighten jib luff ?

this shape produces boat speed 50%+ of apparent wind speed at 90 true up to 12 kn

Interesting. New to 380 sailing. See my post in this forum on my experience with tacking under mainsail alone.

Also, how far fore aft do you put your jib car say between 50 and 90 degree awa ?

The for and aft position of the car is a trim issue there is no one right answer. It should be something you adjust on the fly. As a rule, you want the top and bottom tell tales to luff at the same time, if the top stall first then you need to bring the car forward, if the top stall last then bring the car aft.

As you ease off the wind you also need the car to move outboard. Ideally this involved an XY lead adjuster, but if you don't have one then just a barberhaul to the outboard edge of the boat can work.

Both of these things do the same thing, allow you to control leach tension while having the sail at the right AOA to the wind.
