Baja Bash Esprit 37

A Valiant Esprit 37 can store 14 Jerry cans of 5 gal capacity inside the 2 cockpit lockers.

This should give us a 500 nm range at 4kts against head seas, winds, & current where sailing is really not an option, to cover the 400+ nm between Cabo & the next fuel at Turtle Bay.

I have yet to see how she sits on her lines loaded with 450lbs to port, but I am encouraged by knowing you spend 90% of your time motor sailing on port tack.

Has anyone had new plastic Jerry cans leak during rough conditions?

Thanks, Eddie

Sounds expensive. I did several bashes on a J44 and would get 50ltr used vegetable oil containers at the hardware store in Cabo. Cheap. 2 fit perfect side by side in the cockpit. Small enough to lift and siphon in the tanks. Three away when home.

We did have one leak a few years ago.. busted at the seam..
We have a life-raft storage under the cockpit floor that fits 8-five gallon jugs of fuel or 40 gallons extra..
at one time we caught an oil slick at anchor.. pulled the jugs and found one with a seam busted.. we now put an old towel down first before we load the jugs. even thou it gets wet, it confirms to the bottom of the container...Havent had any other issues with them.

Re: Baja Bash Esprit 37

Last summer I had a brand new 5 gallon can strapped on deck starboard side mid ship. One with the fancy new anti pore spout. Well it was warm and the wind was nonexistent so we went for a swim. While we are swimming I start to smell gas real strong. I'm thinking what the check is going on. So I swim to the boat and find an oil slick on the water. Opon climbing aboard I see fuel on the coach roof and I find that the whole guts to the anti pore mechanism in the spout had been blown out by the internal pressure witch sprayed fuel all over the boat! Thank God we were in the water, thank God we weren't cooking in the galley. I'm sure if we had been cooking there would have been an explosion.

I did the same, with five plastic jerry cans lashed to the forward rail. We took a pretty good beating, but no problemo.

So it seems experience with these are mixed. Mfg defect and heat expansion issues, but others with no problems. Sounds like to be safe they need to be on deck. Or in deck lockers that cannot drain to the interior.

That's for sure! You don't want them to vent or leak inside the cabin.
