Open CPN and oeSENC Charts

I have received a message from Dockhead currently in Greenland. I am not a Open CPN user so you will have to bear with me, but it looks like he purchased a legitimate chart but it doesn't work. Any ideas?

message reads:

We have one problem which you might be able to help with, if you will post a question about it on the forum (or PM the oeSENC chart guys). We purchased their chart for Iceland, but it now won't work without a "refresh the chart list", on the oeSENC tab in the Charts section of the OpenCPN tools menu. But this requires and Internet connection!! They cannot possiblty have designed it, so that you can't use the charts without an Internet connection. They were working perfectly well when we left Iceland a few weeks ago.

Would you mind asking them what I'm doing wrong? I've had enough of sailing uncharted waters for one summer!

Re: Open CPN and oeSENC Charts

Pete...
Thanks for the relay.

For Dockhead:

Once installed, oeSENC charts do not require an internet connection to work.
Please check:
a. Make sure the directory containing oeSENC charts is listed in the OpenCPN settings->Charts->ChartFiles tab.

You should not need to access the Settings->Charts->oesencCharts tab at all.

Is there any other message reported?
You may take a look at the OpenCPN logfile as well.

For Dockhead...

2. Did you change anything significant on the system, such as USB network adapter/aircard, etc.?

Re: Open CPN and oeSENC Charts

I will forward your reply thanks.

In the mean time he has just sent me this:

Thanks, Pete. Please let me know what they say. I did install it for the first time already - it was working fine before we went to Greenland.

I wonder if changing from wifi / for 4G LTE internet access to using Iridium to send and receive e-mails etc has caused this?

He has a windows network on the boat which everything is linked to and I mean everything from the B&G zeus plotters and tv.

I'll ask him.

Re: Open CPN and oeSENC Charts

Wow fixed. His latest reply from the middle of an ocean:

That did it! Profuse thanks to you, Pete, and to Dave!

Incidentally:

Confirming how important it is to consult MULTIPLE sources of cartographic data when planning any passage.

There is a rock, or rather, a skerry, at 67 09.04N 18 41.20W, almost 60 miles (!) off the coast of Northern Iceland and more than 40 miles from the nearest land (the remote island of Grimsey).

It is not visible AT ALL, at any zoom level, on the fresh Navionics chart I'm using in my main nav system. The name of it -- Kolbeinsey -- is somewhere there, but the object is not there at all -- it's all blue water. It's almost directly on the route from Scorseby Sund in Greenland to the nearest point in Iceland, which is how I found it -- double checking the route using old CM93 charts.

Good to see that it is well represented on the oeSENC chart, with a blue ring around it visible at quite small-scale zoom settings, the way all serious obstacles like this should be represented on vector charts.

We are not in fact in those waters -- we made a Moitissier-like decision not to make our planned landfall but to change course and carry on around the East Coast of Iceland. Being in the rhythm of being on passage everyone just wanted to stay at sea.

[you can post this if you want, although not all of it is entirely on topic]

Re: Open CPN and oeSENC Charts

I sent him the picture and this is his reply:

I'd sure hate run into that a la Team Vestas. But it's not even on the bloody chart!!! I'm going to write to Navionics.

This Iridium thing is brilliant.

Still wondering what did it? What can we improve from the software side to avoid such situations?
