Missing Sailboat Miami

A friend asked that i post this. He is currently in Miami with no power or internet.

SV Jabiru5 38' Cabo Rico
White hull, dark blue boot-stripe, painted aluminum mast (white), varnished teak cap-rails and teak bowsprit with varnished name boards on the bow. All sails and canvas were removed prior to the storm.
Missing, No souls on-board *** Believed to have been stolen ***
Last seen by owner Peter Northcott at approximately noon on 9-08-2017 from anchorage in Miami Stadium area where she was anchored up in preparation for the oncoming Hurricane Irma. Boat had been well prepped for the storm and was anchored with three anchors set accordingly in the Miami Stadium anchorage.
Owner is currently in the Miami area searching for the boat and would appreciate any information of sightings.
Please contact Peter Northcott at (954) 451-9999 or send and email to wanderingwallabies@hotmail.com if you have any information about this vessel.
<****

Given the recent events I asked if the possible theft suggestion might be a bit premature. I was told there were 9 boats anchored in the Marine stadium, 4 are on the beach and 4 are in the Mangroves, only JabiruV is missing. The open bay outside of the stadium is quite shallow in most places and even with the surge it would be difficult, though not impossible, for it to have escaped the immediate area. The immediate shoreline and Miami waterfront have been searched by car with no sign of the boat. If anyone comes across a sunken boat in the area near Virginia key and Miami Please let me know.

Thanks;
Bill

I hope he finds his boat intact. I would rather recover an intact stolen boat than one that has blown ashore and damaged.

Yes, it would be good to recover it intact. Even though it will be way down the police list in priorities, it should still be reported. If it came loose from it's anchorage, it should be to leeward with the rest of the beached boats. On the other hand, there are people who would try and "salvage" the "abandoned boat."

I hope he gets his boat back and it is not wrecked.

Re: Missing Sailboat Miami

Florida law doesn't allow you to "Salvage" a boat just because it is adrift. There is a lot more to it than that and you would have to prove the expense that you used to recover it. Even then it would be pretty hard to "Salvage" anything in Florida.

I do hope it turns up floating and undamaged. You would have a pretty hard time stealing a boat in a hurricane I would think. It's somewhere close by, I'd almost bet money on it.

OK just a guess here, but that is a substantial boat, if she had been dismasted and blown into the mangroves, or just on her side in there, she might be hard to see.

There's a sailboat under water by the Marbella Marina south end, in front of the 4 Ambassadors building, in Brickell. Got a radar pole on the stern and a wind charger

Re: Missing Sailboat Miami

The boat wasn't "stolen" IMHO. People don't steal anchored 38' Cabo Ricos during a hurricane.

Re: Missing Sailboat Miami

I think the most effective way to search would be small plane or helicopter, but as one can quite imagine they are a bit tied up with higher priorities in south Florida at the moment. The police and Coast Guard were contacted but again, not high on the priority list. The water will clear up in a week or two and she'll be found if she's sitting on the bottom.

I agree, that is not Jabiru V, but some other poor person's boat. Jabiru V has their radar on the mast. This boat appears to be located in the vicinity I would expect to find Jabiru V if I am correct in assuming that is Rickenbacker causeway in the upper right corner of the photograph.

Re: Missing Sailboat Miami

Jabiru V has been located. The boat is on the bottom north of the railroad bridge to the port of Miami. The owner told me to express his thanks to everyone at CF for keeping an eye out for his boat. The owner is exploring his options for wreck removal. The condition of the hull is unknown at this time, but locals said it was smashed into the seawall along with several other boats.
