The Mighty Milwaukee Anchor Yanker

For those who like to McGuyver, I submit this elegant attachment for my manual windlass. Works great. Get one Milwaukee Hole Hawg, one 15:1 wormdrive gear box, fab some shafts and couplings...presto! You can haul up 180ft of 3/8 chain and a 70 kilo CQR at 4ft/sec. The Hawg runs cool, no excess heat anywhere.

That is slick, especially the gearbox

Looks a lot simpler and lighter than competitors. Any estimate of many feet of chain could be run on a single battery? How many "hauls per charge" sort of number?

Re: The Mighty Milwaukee Anchor Yanker

I havn't had it out cruising yet, but Milwaukee says it will cut 75, 4" holes per charge. I tried it at the dock. It pulled 90' of chain and the anchor dead lift and was still going strong when the anchor was re stowed. Hope it will get at least 2 recoveries per charge.

Had to think a bit about the torque link. The fit on the drill case needs to be a light interference lest a bending moment be created at the 7/16 hex output of the drill. The "C" flange on the gear box has an integrated seal for input bearing so it was kept. One less thing to fab. If that was not the case the unit would be smaller in width. Since the windlass pulls in either rotational direction..just brace the butt of the drill against the deck and let her rip

I wonder what you could do with the 28v right angle a lot of people use for winches? Would be nice for them to be able to pull multiple duty with just one tool.

Yes, considered that. Two issues.
1-The chuck is the weak link on the drill. Needed the Hex output for durability.
2-The low speed of the drill is to fast. The chain would really fly over the gypsey.
