larger cruising boat recommendations

Hi

new here...first post

considering a cruising sailboat. Would like to take my family away for a year or two to see the sights. The plan would be to continue to own the boat and use it locally in the NE after the big trip.

wants

three cabins (one needs bunks or separate beds)
two heads
easy to handle double handed
better than averagae performance for a cruising sailboat
bow thruster
under 60 ft

I have been looking at Hylas 56 and Oyster but concerned they may be hard to doublehand. Also started looking at Hanse.

a little direction and advice would be appreciated

Re: larger cruising boat recommendations

Are you thinking used or new? If older, how much older would be a problem for you? (10 years, 20years) - are you thinking about a watermaker, washing machine etc? As your family's expected comfort level will have a direct impact on the type and useability of storage and utility lockers, tankage etc.

Howdy and Welcome Aboard CF!

The following is offered in a friendly tone of voice and with the sole intent to help you get helpful answers from others.

Regardless of size or number of berths or gear you may want, the most important thing to indicate in a post that asks for boat suggestions is...

What is the Maximum Asking Price you will consider?

This also assumes you will have the funds necessary to do any kind of necessary repairs to the boat (if used) and that upgrades (toys you want) are extra and that maintenance is something you intend to cover as well as other incidental fees (taxes, etc.). All of that would be extra, or above the Asking Price.

Clearly stating the "Maximum Asking Price" (which is very different from a "budget") will help others here steer you towards boats that may fit your other desires.

Best of luck on your boat search!

Great points. Budget is not a major factor if value is there. $1,000,000 or less would be no problem

Awesome boat.... Lifting keel for the shallow areas, great view from the inside, and push button everything to easily single hand.

I like spending other peoples money.

Re: larger cruising boat recommendations

If you're thinking that there will be 2 primary crew onboard, AKA doublehanded, then the boat needs to be fully set up to be singlehanded (by the smallest, weakest, least experienced crewmember). And everyone onboard MUST be comfortable doing every job onboard, including; being the skipper/driver during docking, & also for every emergency imaginable. With this being something of a sticking point with the majority of women out there, particularly on boats over 40'.

A while back I created an (unpolished) DIY Boatbuying Sticky, linked below. And in it there are some questions to ask of yourself & your family which will help you to narrow down what boat will best suit you. Plus there are lots, & lots of links to other self-educational resources which will help you with this. Including some to the websites of professionals who specialize in matching people with boats.
It's a lotta' info, but most find it/much of the info in it helpful. Just kinda' ignore it's seemingly irrelavent title & read on.

BTW, You do realize that with this kind of budget you can afford a really, really nice 40'-45' catamaran, right? Even a fully custom, or semi-custom one. Where the ride & lifestyle will be a lot more comfortable. Along with ease of access from the water, etc.

Re: larger cruising boat recommendations

At that budget, you can look for a new monohull rather than a used boat and get it set up exactly the way you want. I would recommend looking at interestingsailboats.blogspot.pt. It is run by Polux from this site and has a lot of info on fast cruisers.

You have not talked about what kind of sailing you intend but if it is voyaging rather than cruising then you may want to look at Garcia Expedition, Alubat Ovni or Cigale, Amels of various stripes, etc. Also look at X yachts - the X6 sounds a fraction large but there may be something in their range that works.

There are several multihull options (again, new and customized) that would fit into your budget as well.

This is a contender for sure.

Would need to learn more about the swing keel and twin rudders. Any concerns with the. Swing keel?
