Re-galvanizing anchor chain

I have about 200 feet of 5/16" bbb chain that I'd like to have re-galvanized. We are currently at Marco Island, FL, so if I could get this done within 100 or so miles of here, it would be great.

Does anyone have any experience with a company that does this kind of work?

Thanks.

Re: Re-galvanizing anchor chain

We used to have chain re-galvanized in the US but as of now I can't find a single place that still does it. Va Galvanizing used to be great but as of now they won't do it. Seems modern chain doesn't hold up to the process as well as older chain. If anyone knows of a place on the east coast that still does please post and contact me as I'm often asked...

Re: Re-galvanizing anchor chain

Valkyrie on the Cruiseheimers net had his chain galvanized last year in the Tampa area if I recall correctly. I had mine done in Jacksonville. Your favorite search engine should turn up locations.

Re: Re-galvanizing anchor chain

If anyone finds a galvanizer STILL (as of 2017) doing chain please post. South Atlantic Galvanizing, the largest owner of east coast firms has banned the practice as of 2016.

It appears Valmont Coatings has a location in both Miami and Tampa.

Re: Re-galvanizing anchor chain

I have used AZZ Gulf Coast Galvanizing in Citronelle, Alabama several times over the last 20 years. They have fair prices and do good, prompt work.

Of course they are only about 50 miles from our homeport, Pensacola, FL.
Your distance may vary

If you are cruising through the area, stop by our dock in Bayou Chico for a visit.

Re: Re-galvanizing anchor chain

South Atlantic Galvanizing (near Tampa) redid 100 ft of 5/16" a few years back. Good job, reasonable price, and no stuck links.

Out curiosity, what's a reasonable price? (I have no clue what this may cost)

Thanks!

Re: Re-galvanizing anchor chain

As best I remember it was around $/ lb.

One advantage is you get a serious chain coating. Nothing good heard about current crop of new production.

Valmont (all their sites) no longer galvanizes chain. I just called and confirmed this. I know many people had chain done years ago; as of now we're looking for a jobber who will currently work on chain; all the ones above no longer do.

The best reason given is that current chain fails too often in the hot dip process and owners blame them. This is a new thing; I fear chain is getting worse, but regardless, does anyone have a galvanizer who has confirmed (by phone) that they will work on chain now?

Re: Re-galvanizing anchor chain

Commonwealth Galvanizing in Ashland, Virginia (near Richmond). I use them to gavlavanize our anchors and often, if the timing is right, we have others add their anchors and chain to the order to reduce their costs. Most galvanizing companies have a specific weight for their minimum. That weight threshold is usually much higher than most individual customers can provide. I get excellent quality, pricing, and service from Commonwealth but the weight requirement to get this is 900 lbs. Other companies have lower weights (600 lbs) but the price is higher.

Individual customers may want to check with dock lift companies to see if they can piggyback on their galvanizing order.
