French VAT on Imported Used Boat Gear?

I just ordered a Fountaine Pajot 45 that I'll pick up in La Rochelle France and take directly to the Med for personal use. I'd like to ship over my existing dinghy and other used gear (nothing new). Does anyone know if you have to pay VAT on the used gear? I read that you don't if you can prove that you purchased it at least a year in advance of arriving in France. Thanks for any advice anyone has on this.
