Thumbs up A great website with sailing destinations and recommendations? :)

Hi everyone!

My husband and I are cruising the Mediterranean sea every summer, and are now planning a trip around the world. We have been looking for good websites (or apps) that would have decent recommendations on ports, anchorages, maybe some reviews so that we know which places to pick and which to avoid. Unfortunately we haven’t found anything really complete nor up to date. Some pages have good information but they are quite outdated, incomplete and difficult to use. Others just look good but nothing more. When it comes to apps it’s even worse, and the only option seems to be the Imray PDF version of the pilot (available only for some destinations).

My husband is an IT magician and we would like to develop something useful for all the sailors out there We would welcome any ideas on what such website should include! Our idea was to create a Knowledge Base of sailing destinations where sailors around the world could share their experiences, comments, pictures etc. We were also thinking that a complete and interactive app would be a great addition!

What do you think? Is this something you consider useful? Please share your ideas with us! We are very excited about the concept!

Re: A great website with sailing destinations and recommendations? :)

Have you looked through the "destinations" subforum here?

Or http://www.noonsite.com/General/CruisingInformation ?

Between the two, I'd imagine just about all the "information" you're discussing is covered.

Howdy and Welcome Aboard CF!

It is a good idea.
But you are not the first to think about it.
Others are ahead of you with site and app development.

You are new to CF. If you spend some time reading through the CF forums, you will find mention of similar ventures. I seem to recall about three or four different, but similar, ideas in threads in just the last two years or so.

Here is one (I have forgotten the others)
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ys-197564.html

Hope that helps.

Enjoy your time on the forum and good luck with your dreams.

Hi Guys!

Thanks so much for responding!

You are absolutely right, we are not the first to tackle the topic... But we feel that the pages that are out there are very difficult to use and there is so much potential for something more user friendly and easier to share.

The information available on pages such as noonsite.com and CF is amazing and no doubt that if you spend enough time you will find what you are looking for. Now, our idea would be to create a complete knowledge base for sailing, including all pilot information for every port and anchorage, charts for zoomed in areas, pictures, reviews, tips and interaction between us. And what's important in an app version too

@Steadman Uhlich - Thank you for sharing this thread! I will try to find more and follow up on their progress

We are really determined to build it so whatever ideas you might have - they will be very much appreciated !!

So how are you going to collect the data?

Yet Another Crowd Sourced System (YACCS) which is dependent on huge participation from many other people for completeness and accuracy?

Or are you going to devote the rest of your lives full time to gathering, and keeping up to date, just a small sub-set of what is already out there on sites such as Noonsite, Active Captain and countless "Port Authority" websites etc?

NO, although a sympathic idea in reality its re-inventing the wheel. My advice is to use your energy to enjoy your trip around the world.

Re: A great website with sailing destinations and recommendations? :)

To be honest, this project sounds like the dream of a computer jock, not of a cruiser. IMO there is no need for additional such sources, even if you think the existing sites are cumbersome. The real issues in such endeavors are not the site mechanics, but the sourcing, vetting and maintaining of the data. To contemplate this as a source for useful info, said info MUST be vetted by a knowledgeable person if trust is to be maintained, and this would be a full time job for a staff... not something you can do whilst cruising yourselves. And since this sort of info is constantly changing, it will be an unending task, collating the new and properly discarding the old and outdated.

For me, part of the joy of cruising is the exploring new places. If you have a Michelin guide for every port and anchorage it becomes more like a packaged tour and less like an adventure. Some general guidance is good, but charts and official pilots have sufficed for a long time, with some help from written cruising guides. Any rational person knows that such printed guides will not be up to date, and makes allowance for that. A crowd sourced guide... well, it could easily lead you to think it was indeed current when it was not.

At any rate, I fear that your proposal is not practical from an organizational standpoint, will require far more effort on your part than you can imagine, and will not add appreciably to the cruising sailor's experience.

So, go sailing and leave your troubles behind. Enjoy the world without the burden of a Hurclean task. Enjoy...

Jim

Re: A great website with sailing destinations and recommendations? :)

Several Ideas come to mind as ideas.
1. A new version of Active Captain (https://activecaptain.com)
2. Include Sailing channels (https://sailing-channels.com) so sailors and want to be sailors can discover and learn from those already doing it.
3. Develop a similar app for blogs
4. Provide a directory of useful books and downloads ( like checklists ) of various kinds aimed at newbies and those looking for trusted information on a topic.
5. Have a curated list of information by topic like AdventuresOnBoats.com
6. Lists of sources by region for various cruising products.

Re: A great website with sailing destinations and recommendations? :)

There’s plenty of information about cruising destinations on the different Facebook sailing groups. They are updated almost daily by cruisers who are there today, every day. It’s not as exciting as creating your own app, granted, but you would be hard pressed to keep the app more up to date than that. Many websites that rely on their visitors to provide info may do well for a season, but as time passes who is going to check if that info is still valid?

Well, nothing like coming up with what you think is a great idea only to be told that it's already been done. As a person who comes up with great ideas sometimes and is told that it's already been done, I suggest that you just do it and never ask for an opinion.

Can anyone remember who it was who said that for most of us our original ideas can be written with ease on the back of a postage stamp?
