1993 Lagoon TPI Catamaran

1993 Lagoon 37 TPI Catamaran For Sale

My wife and I have had a great time cruising on Aventura, our 1993 Lagoon 37 TPI catamaran, but age and new interests lead us to put her up for sale. The asking price is $115,000. She is in great shape and ready to cruise.

Lagoon 37 TPI catamarans were built in the USA (Rhode Island) between 1993-1995 by Tillotson Pearson Inc. using Baltek end-grain balsa cored construction, triaxal glass and vinylester resin. Over the years, the 37 TPI has earned a reputation for high quality construction, durability, seaworthiness, and great sailing ability. As a result, they tend to hold their value well. Several have circumnavigated. A few review articles were written about the Lagoon 37 TPI. Check the following links:

A unique and valuable feature of Aventura is that she is equipped with Schaefer in-boom furling combined with a Lewmar 40 electric winch. This allows one to safely and easily raise, lower and reef the main sail from the comfort and security of the helm station. The boat is easily single-handed.

That is a 'highly unusual engine set up. One hull side engine has 50% more power than the other! Did you do this?

Re: 1993 Lagoon TPI Catamaran

The Lagoon 37 TPI originally came with two Perkins Perama M25 engines with 18 HP each, which some might consider just a tad underpowered. At some point a previous owner replaced the port engine with a Perkins M30 engine with 27 HP. I don't know why he replaced the engine or why he went with the larger engine, but it may be that Perkins had previously dropped the M25 from the Perama line and that the M30 was the closest replacement.

When I bought the boat I had some concern about the two different engines, but that quickly faded. I run both engines at roughly the same RPM and the boat tracks straight with the rudders amidship. And I appreciate the extra speed that comes from the larger engine. Also, maneuvering in tight places has not been a problem. The ideal would be if the boat had two M30 engines, but I think one M25 and one M30 is actually better than two M25s.

OK Mike makes sense now! How does that vang work ? Don't see any pull-down lines? ...and what hull number is it?

Talking Re: 1993 Lagoon TPI Catamaran

Geoleo,
The vang and the boom furler work as a single system. The vang is a rigid vang that holds the boom at the proper angle (usually 88 degrees) to the mast so that the boom furler does its job without complaint or incident. It can be adjusted to change the angle but this is typically not done under way. Like everything else on a boat, this is a trade off. If you are a racer and will constantly pull on every available line attempting to get an extra 1/10 of a kt., then any kind of furler is a bad idea. For a cruiser, a 1/10 of a kt. is not nearly as important as having a relaxed, enjoyable and stress-free time. For me, peace and tranquility are important elements of cruising. Aventura will definitely go faster than the typical mono-hull of the same size, but it is not set up for racing. Still, she will regularly do 7kt. under a decent wind and I have seen 9+ kt. for hours at a time.
Mike
