Vloggers hit an uncharted rock/reef in the Kimberleys

The "Sailing Into Freedom" Vloggers

Looks serious.

He has kept his cool and has clearly made it out to upload the video but don't know the future of the boat.

He's a resourceful guy I'm sure he can make the best of it.

that does not look good.
but one has to wonder what they were doing sailing at night in an area of uncharted reefs where there are 30 ft tides, where there are many know and unknown dangers clearly marked on the chats,IE marked as unsurveyed?

He's normally pretty careful, it will be interesting to see how the story unfolds.

But your right about the area - here is a picture from someone last year...

FROM THE BLOG,though probably describing events not quite of this current caliber
brings to mind the saying "there are old sailors, and there are bold sailors, but very few old, bold sailors"

Thou shalt engage in an activity that you are scared of at least once per day, week etc, whatever gets your heart pumping furiously. I call this therapy. I am not talking about a heart attack situation here although the closer you get to this I believe the better the therapy becomes. Whatever doesn’t kill you can only make you stronger, well, until it kills you of course. But then you are dead and it really doesn’t matter anymore. I try to get my heart pumping furiously as often as I can. Ya gotta love being scared and trying therapy! No drug comes close to that feeling. Sadly few of the younger generation get to experience that and turn to alternatives.

Re: Vloggers hit an uncharted rock/reef in the Kimberleys

I have followed Plukky from the get go. Love his videos and life attitude. I would like to get the rest of the story from him. I know they were rescued by someone, and I think the boat was abandoned... but he has yet to fill in any detains. I sent him some $, but want to know what's going on before I send any more. -Steve-

His video made me wonder if there was a need for inflatable tubes, much like a lift raft, that could be activated in case of hull breach to keep the vessel afloat.

He and his crew are OK... but the rest of the story remains to unfold.

1. I would never sail with this skipper.

2. This should be a wake up call to all those we hear from on this forum who want to get out and take on the seas with little practical knowledge and experience.

3. Being a video blogger sailor does not make you indestructible.

I feel very sorry for his mate who looks like a deer in the headlights most of the time.

It is commendable that they were able to continue filming in the midst of a possible serious disaster. They truly show how scary a situation can be.

P.S. I have not been following this blog whatsoever and feel very sorry for the boat and the crew and wish them well.

What is the reason you'd not sail with him? And what's that based on?

Gee how many reasons do you want?

lets start a list.

Sailing in the cyclone belt during cyclone season.

Sailing at night in an area noted for its poor charting. (more inclined to think it is another case of plotter assisted sinking, but time will tell)

We will wait to see how high the holed vessel floats before adding more.

Re: Vloggers hit an uncharted rock/reef in the Kimberleys

Sorry to see anyone have an accident at sea, but personally I am not sure whether the fact that they continued to make their video should be admired or condemned. If I had hit a rock and holed my boat so severely then there are many more constructive things I could find for my crew to do rather than hold a video camera. Different priorities I guess.....

Best of luck to them, but in spite of their well-filmed video appeal I won't be contributing to their account for a new boat. To me it has a similar smell to the 2 American lady sailors who were lost at sea for 5 months.....

The photo suggests he was not sailing but motoring. Had to be incredibly unlucky to not be able to get off before tide went out. It looks to not be badly damaged so why not patch whatever holes you see and kedge off at high tide.

Dave, picture posted earlier in the post is not his boat, follow the OP link to the video, the boats in real bad shape. What I find odd is if he is now ashore, in order to upload the video, why are not we getting the whole story, like the rescue???

What a shame!
I enjoy his videos.
I think he is a good sailor, who does his homework, great diver with a fun sense of humor.

Living his life to the edge, it is normal to take reasonable risks, but this time he got caught.

Could be that the high tide schedule encouraged him to leave at night, if that was what he did.
