Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44i

We are seriously considering buying a Jeanneau 44i from Moorings. Looks like a good deal and a well looked after boat (subject to marine survey).

Anyone had any experience (good / bad) with the 2010 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44i?

We also want to install a generator, desalinator and have constant internet access while at sea. We will then not be worried about how much hot water we (my wife) use or how much energy is consumed with a/c or running specific onboard appliances. How do we achieve this?

A/C at sea?

That is a LOT of power that needs to be generated. How much? Depends on the A/C unit.

Your best to do a power usage plan for whatever electrical/electronic units you hope to use, and then decide how big a solar panel/battery/generator/wind mill combination will be required to drive all of that. You may find you want to cut back on some things. If your hoping to do longer passages, your going to need all the room for supplies and tankage that you can get, and a large generator will interfere with that.

And full blown internet? That requires a big budget. Where are you going to be sailing? In most places wifi or cell coverage is at least adequate.

To give you some idea, if you haven't researched it yet, take a look at the costs, speed and small amount of data allowed.

I think you will find that you will be doing a wants versus needs analysis, as you depending where you plan on sailing, your going to meet either space constraints or dollar ones.

thanks for the common sense input and orientation. I sailed a lot back in Australia and a/c was non existent and we knew no better.

In Florida where high humidity becomes an issue, a/c becomes more relevant. Sailing at sea is of course different to mooring in a marina where you can plug in if you have a/c anyway.

Move to a generator is a big deal and high $. I do need to complete a realistic assessment of our energy needs v's energy generation alternatives (including wind, solar etc).

Your wifi comments also noted. We will sail back from BVI to Miami and I need to assess where we might procure daily wifi connections while on the trip. Checked Inmarsat - ouch / no thanks. Not looking to go bankrupt on one trip.

I'm not sure where you plan on cruising, but I've been bouncing around the Caribbean for many years and the only time that air conditioning is really a worthwhile item is when at the dock.

I have a desalinator and genset and they see moderate use, even though my galley is an electric one. With a good battery bank and appropriately sized generator you should find a nice balance between genset running hours and energy use.

Internet is going to be available in many anchorages in the Caribbean. Most of the time free, sometimes for a usage fee. Getting a WiFi extender is a necessity if you want to be connected much of the time. Getting a permanent internet connection will cost you about $12K in hardware and then you will pay about $1/Mb when connected.

Your question is incomplete. What do plan to do with the boat? Where are you going to sail nor not sail and sit at a dock? Without you can expect a million different answers.

We sail a Jeanneau DS40 and it is a great world class sailing boat in our opinion.
