Hello from New England

Hello to all the gracious information sharing members. I have obtained a lot of information in these forums and decided it was time to join. I have more questions than answers at this point as my wife and I are brand new to sailing and are interested in a Catamaran. For the next five years we plan to keep it close to us in the Boston area, and then possibly look at snow birding down the east coast once we have gotten some experience. After that maybe we would have enough experience to consider crossing the GS and head to the Caribbean. Just wanted to say Hello and Thank you.

We are based in Cambridge but cruise Maine in the summer and the Bahamas in the winter. Pretty perfect. You'll be ready to try Maine after a summer of experience.

Almo,
Welcome. As CarlF, we are also sailing out of Cambridge/Charlestown. Went to Maine last summer, it is even more beautiful by boat than by car. The Bahamas are in our plans for the next years as well. Enjoy getting to know the wonderful world of sailing.

Re: Hello from New England

Well, I'm prejudiced in favor of Maine too. But one thing I should add; if you plan to spend much time in marinas, in New England there are far fewer slips that will fit a cat.

That's not intended as any kind of judgement against cats! Just that, for whatever reason, more slips up here are sized for monos.

Of course that's no problem if you plan to anchor or take a mooring most of the time, which is my preference anyway. And there ARE places with wide slips, face docks or piers. Just nowhere near as many.

Re: Hello from New England

Welcome Almo! We are in a very similar situation. We are currently looking for a boat (monohull) to keep in Boston and sail in the New England area for the next 5 years. Then, we'll see if we feel like going north/northeast, or south... Hopefully we cross paths during this time.

Fair winds!
