Wooden boat building in Egypt

I am sure you have not seen boat building like that in some time !

Wood is still the primary construction method in Egypt (mostly carvel construction technique although there is a nice boat i have seen that was built using lapstrake / clinker construction - last 2 photos).

amazing what you can do with some galvanised nails and a circular saw!

luckily the red sea has 0% humidity otherwise these boats would rot in no time from fresh water leaks!

Re: Wooden boat building in Egypt

The sea you see (ok its a pun! ) is the Mediterranean ... The high salt content stops the wood from rotting however the red sea is much "harder" on the wood. Red sea boats need to be out on a dry dock in 7-8 months, Mediterranean 9-10 month.

Some more pics

Next posts will be on a very unusual hybrid technique which a cross between composite construction and traditional wood build.... Not a good lasting technique but man the boats are super CHEAP ! as long as you don't keep them in the water they will be fine for 5-8 years.

Re: Wooden boat building in Egypt

And know for something completely different ....

These boats are built with mulberry framing and white wood.
Polyresin and matt fiber is used to cover the wood (white wood rots very quickly.)

Needless to say the boats are very light and very cheap. If cared for they will last 5-8 years however due to poor workmanship they usually delaminate rather quickly if subjected to heavy weather ...

Re: Wooden boat building in Egypt

I guess they have to import all of their wood?

Re: Wooden boat building in Egypt

Mulberry wood is available in Egypt so is white wood, with no rain forests or wide range of trees most wood is imported like Eastern Red Cedar, Mahogany etc.

Re: Wooden boat building in Egypt

And some finished wooden boats

The ugly looking on at the bottom is the finer over wood technique. The others are pure carvel wooden boats ...
