thoughts on a 1983 dufour 1800?

Hi all,

I am currently in a 1/4 partnership in an ericson 27' and am considering buying a dufour 1800 with inboard diesel.

I have found very little info online. the boat is slightly smaller than the ericson but a little newer and much cleaner.

any thoughts on sailing performances? particular things to look for?

I will be mostly doing SF baysails and occasional overnighter.

Cheers,

Dufour are good boats and more than up to what you want it for..
One of the firms that got swallowed up by the big producers like Beneteau.. actually I think they were the swallowers..

Re: thoughts on a 1983 dufour 1800?

My book about second-hand sailing yachts says that the Dufour 1800 is strongly built and ages well. It is lively and pleasant to helm in light winds. It is a bit tender in stronger winds but remains effective when close-hauled, not so much downwind.

The performance depends on the appendages: deep draught, shallow draught or centreboard.

About 1200 were built in 3 years from 1979 to 1982, not bad for that time.

I have a 79 1800, purchased it at the end of the season last year. looking forward to weekends on it. I love it for me and the wife, close but still room to entertain the grandkids.

Dufour Yachts was established in 1964, and until the late 1980s built a string of mostly fairly fast cruising yachts in a wide variety of sizes, of which the 1800 is one of the smallest - the 1800 referring to the nominal displacement in kilograms. The Dufour 1800 started life as the Dufour 25 in 1978, and was renamed the Dufour 1800 in 1980. At the time Dufour was one of the largest European builders, and the 1800 sold about 200 in three years.

Welcome to CruisersForum, Eric
My book is a French one. The title is "Guide des voiliers d'occasion de 5 à 9 mètres" (guide of second-hand sailing yachts from 5 to 9 meters). It was published in 2000. The same author wrote an updated edition in 2010, with another publisher: Vagnon - Boutique
