Catalina Morgan 45 Rigging Question

To start with I'm a cruiser & not much of a sailor...that said I'm trying to understand the rigging of my (new-to-me) 1994 Catalina Morgan 45 sloop. The mainsheet is rigged at the outer end through blocks to the traveler and then into the cockpit at the rear...this is what I'm used to. However the other end is rigged through the boom to the mainmast and then back into the front of the cockpit with the main halyard and topping lift (I think that's what you call the line that holds the boom up when the sail is not hoisted). My question is why I need the mainsheet rigged to the cockpit at both ends? The answer matters because I'd like to use the space and sheaves for a reefing line instead. What am I missing here?

both bitter ends of the main sheet are rigged back to the cockpit so the main trimmer can stay on the high side.

You don't need this feature, and will be just fine with one end of the mainsheet tied to the boom.

That's what I was hoping to hear...thanks & now I should have plenty of space for a reefing line. Really appreciate the feedback!

We just changed our 380 back to a single sided main. It gets pretty annoying when it is all pulled out on one side and nothing left on the other. Also they used v style cleats that dont hold for anything and we ended up just putting both sides on the winches.
