Formosa 41 Stability Report

Hello everyone, this is my first post on Cruisers Forum.......we have a 1978 Formosa 41. Does anyone have a stability report for the Formosa 41 or any information on how we can obtain a stability report. We are located in Port Dover, on Lake Erie. I can send you my email address if you have a report and we can discuss details. Thank you.

they donot tip over. they sail upright. they take biiig winds. i love my formosa 41. it was designed to sail trade winds and does a right decent job
donot have numbers as i donot believe in that. i sail it. it works.
60+ kt chubasco, no sweat-- was FUN!!!! we got 8.4 kts speed over ground under reefed mizzen and reefed jib. not even 5 degrees heel.
now, in light air, it is another story. they love WIND
come on out!!!!

We have a Formosa 41. I second what Land Cruiser and zeehag said.

I'll add that the boat sails well enough in 10 kts.,but in big seas is where it gives you a comfortable ride. We're very pleased with our Formosa 41.

Oh, and no numbers. I'll watch this thread to see if anyone shows up with numbers.

Is this the William Garden design Formosa ketch? Or a different boat? I'm rather struggling with the just 5 degrees of heel in high winds statement - presumably there's roll as well? I've had a 51' Formosa ketch in the past and got much higher heel angles in 20+ winds.

garden, formosa 41. jib n mizzen both reefed. chubasco hit n was FUN!!!.
has some roll in a quartering sea but so does everything.
there is no abjectly perfect boat. this is as close as it gets.
btw i have been able to cook foods in 30 ft quartering seas without difficulty.
go from there.
i will not ever sell this boat. it is a perfect cruiser.

i have sailed many kinds of boats, no racing. not interested in race boats, only good solid cruisers.
sailed a beautiful lil clinton crane raceabout when a kid. that one is now 113 yrs old.
yes formosa 41 is perfect.
my advice as always is
SAIL IT if you dislike it, donot buy it. easy peasy

Welcome NurseMaggie... I have never owned a Formosa 41 but did deliver one from San Diego north to San Francisco in early February 1983. The delivery was for a friend of mine who had lived aboard in Mexico for a couple of years prior to '83.
We were caught in the hurricane that marched up the coast as far as Monterey where it tore off the old Blue Moon Saloon from the end of the old dock in Monterey.
We were off Point Conception when it hit and lying a hull we were driven about 150 miles out to sea. The fact that we lived through the storm I attribute to the toughness and strongly built Formosa. A lesser vessel would have broken up and sent us to the bottom. We were many times lying on our beams end with the ports under water! Zee's story is worth listening to as she has been sailing her boat for several years in Mexico and loves her!
You will not find another vessel built as strongly as a Formosa of that vintage... Slow but golden in a blow! Phil

i dislike boats that throw me across saloon in seas. those suck, btdt. i dislike being banged about like bowling pins in seas and winds.
i prefer not to have to use nursee skillz in a seaway, so formosa is an excellent solution.
i sail ready--ie, at night, jib n mizzen only. chubascos, papagayos, tehun-anos happen. so do squalls. at night they seem worser than worse. i am comfortable in my ketch in a sea and wind.
donot wish to try furycames, as those have my utmost respect.. nasty things. but iff..... then i am glad to know my boat is solid enough to withstand hell if i should meet it.
these were designed to sail trade winds. awesomely, btw... and comfortably.
under jib n mizzen, these are easily single handed. the drive line is easily accessible, as opposed to many other boats folk s take to cruise. donot need the spider monkey other boats need.
and as for bashing into seas-- these do well, leave sloops in the dust, as it were. i watched us be left behind while sailing gom in a 1.2 kt bashing into the mess and wished i had my ketch with us then...was sailing a seidelmann 37 sloop, opb.
there are many other cruisers that work, but.. i love the looks and feel under me of this one. is my last boat ever. i will will it to someone else when it is my time to go ...
oh yes, and bubba daboatkat loves his formosa. but he wont speak up.

Are you looking to have stability testing done on your vessel.....? Perhaps trying to meet a Transport Canada or insurance requirement...?

If you'd like to have one created, Id be happy to discuss.

I don't understand...The stability test is required by transport Canada. Could please explain what you mean. I am anxious to hear from you. Thank you very much.

No it's not a requirement through Transport Canada, unless the vessel is being used for a commercial purpose.
