Cooking gas, bottle filling in Vanuatu

Hello everyone,
I am hoping that some kind soul can help me with any information about cooking gas bottle refills in Vanuatu. For the record I have English bottles. Thanks in advance,
Kind regards,
Colin.

Re: Cooking gas, bottle filling in Vanuatu

Hi, I'm not sure about English bottles. Ours, from America and from Australia, we have filled in Port Vila, taking them across in the dinghy, however, this was a longish time ago, and things may have changed there. The people at Yachting World may have added the service, by now. I'd suggest you check around locally. Probably, the guy at the boatyard south of Iririki Is. will know, too.

Good luck with it.

Ann

Thanks for your prompt reply Ann, so I now know it was possible and looking on the bright side is probably still possible.
Kind regards,
Colin.

Vanuatu Free Cruising & Sailing Guide

"Both Propane and Butane are available in Port Vila while only Butane is available in Luganville at present. Origin Gas will fill your bottles with standard Australia/New Zealand/USA fittings."

Origin supply gas in main centres in PNG, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji (under the name Fiji Gas), Cook Islands and Samoa.

Re: Cooking gas, bottle filling in Vanuatu

Bottle gas refills easily available in Luganville, Tanna and Port Vila. Both European and male thread and Oz/NZ female thread. If your bottle is past expiry they may pick you up on it but never fear, we had one of our own bottles tested and the valve replaced free of charge, just took a bit longer to fill but worth it. Luganville fill station is a ways out of town but they have a store in town now where it can be dropped and picked up later in the day. Port Vila has dinghy access but you might need to shout through the fence to get someone to unlock it. Located southeast corner of the inner harbour anchorage. Tanna I'm not too sure about. Any other info you need just give us a shout.

Santo now Jim, been here for a year and a half. So much nicer than the rat race down south.

As long as it is in test I can't see any problem. We're not as anal about these things as developed countries.

The only place we've been that rejected composite bottles is New Zealand.

Yeah, NZ is not really progressive in these sort of areas

I'm getting some info together to update that guide & will check up on the butane thing in Santo. AFAIK gas all over Vanuatu is a butane/propane blend and is the same in all centres.

AT Tanna, it would probably be at Lenakel, not the world's most user-friendly anchorage.

Re: Cooking gas, bottle filling in Vanuatu

Hello everyone,
Just a bit of further information that may be of help to anyone.
My first bottle was refused by the gas company as it was the wrong pressure apparently but they directed me to Villa hardware and they filled it for me. Went back to the gas company, for clarity this is the one you access by dinghy, with my second English bottle same bottle company same size gas bottle and they said yes we can fill this however we need to paint it and change the valve. To which I promptly replied that could they do all this by tomorrow as I was checked out. After some good natured banter they agreed to fill it with out paint and valve. So as we say in the East End of London, I had a right result.
