Morgan OI 41 Steering

Hello all

Im hoping there is a morgan 41 out island owner out there that could do a bit of detective work for me. I recently purchased a 1976 OI 414 sloop which is docked in North Carolina. Unfortunately I am in Montana trying to get together materials for a refit. Im looking at a Raymarine autopilot but to size it correctly I need to know the manufacturer/model of the hydrolic ram or at least its capacity in cubic inches. If theres a morgan owner out there who has just nothing to do and would like help it would be much appreciated.

I think you are asking about the hydraulic ram in the steering on the Morgan? If so, the only OI's I sailed on all had cable steering, not hydraulic so no ram.

Or was there a previous autopilot on the boat that used a hydraulic ram to connect to the quadrant? If that is the question then you'll have to find out which autopilot.

I've been on 2 OI41's that had Hynautics hydraulic steering. That company was bought up by Teleflex.

You'll need to check your boat. As the original equipment may have been replaced over the years.

Skipmac thanks for the reply. yes I am talking about the Hydrolic steering ram and you guys are right I may not be dealing with the original ram. Raymarine has three differnt pumps for there autopilot based on ram volume so if I can get a basic idea im probably ok. The dockmaster was suppose to move the boat back to the dock from where it was anchored for the last hurricanes so Ill see if hes willing to stick his head in there and get the info.

Although the post is old, just in case there is more interest, my '73 Morgan and others that I am aware of have the "Hynautics" brand hydraulic steering. All the specs can be viewed on a PDF manual that can be easily found by searching for "hynautics steering manual" online.

Wondering if the 41 has the same size ram as the 33?

Interesting. I learned to sail on an early 70s OI36 which had wire and pulley mechanical steering.

'seems to be some variety. The '73 Morgan 33' that I used to own had direct tiller steering and there's a 36' Morgan nearby that does have the cable and quadrant steering; however, I'm pretty sure those that have the hydraulic steering have the Hynautic system.

Skip... Probably was a base model.... Roll up or electric portlights?

I've heard both, but hyd definitely more common

Yessir!
