Re: Sad day in Sydney - Boating Fatality

Sad indeed, but I don't quite understand the title. Capsized? looks to be in pretty normal condition, and being a ballasted monohull, unlikely to have been capsized in those waters and conditions. Knocked down with a MOB perhaps... will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Sorry for the loss of life and the stranding of the boat, of course, and for the suffering of the survivor.

Re: Life Lost in Capsize

This yacht was sold in June or July last year, the new owner attempted to take south from Wollongong to Melbourne, but looks like he only got to the Shoalhaven area before stopping. It seems he might have left it there. The ABC article on the sinking says it came from Greenwell Point yesterday which is the same area and they had just purchased it (price in 2017 was about AUS$6500).

Last night's forecast was awful and this morning Kurnell was blowing a constant 20 to 30 knots southerly all night and Wattamolla was 30 to 40 knots for most of the night. These two places are less than one mile and five miles respectively from where the boat sank.

Presumably they sailed yesterday to Jibbon Beach inside Port Hacking and then this morning left to head north again. If so, they seem to have hugged the coast rather than head towards Cape Baily as this is the only way you could really end up on the beach there. I presume they have either hit Merries Reef (extremely obvious uon charts) or been rolled by a wave on it. The swell at 5 am as recorded just near there was 3.4 to 7.4 metres, huge!

Agree, I also cannot see a keel in any of the photos.

Also some more information about this boat from the marina at Greenwell Point, photo showing it when it arrived in 2017. Confirmed they left yesterday.https://www.facebook.com/Greenwell-P...6020217112200/

Very sad, but was not a night to be out in the ocean at all.

Looks like quite a small boat, maybe a trailer sailor?

it was 29 feet, so less than 9 metres. Could be a trailer sailor perhaps, but has been on water for at least 14 months. Comments from marina seem to indicate it had a lot of growth on it.

Latest Nine News report seems to show keel has broken off. https://www.9news.com.au/2018/09/24/...ed-wanda-beach

Good on the woman for having her wits about her to swim to shore. Pretty darn scary event, imho.

Sad event.

An update about this terrible accident. The following link is an article in the local paper about it. Included are photos of the yacht, showing a rope wrapped around the prop. It also appears the keel is intact from one of the photos and the Police were able to tow it successfully on Tuesday.

Jim
The news articles say capsized. Which would explain the title.

I long ago stopped trusting the accuracy of "news reports." Is a knockdown a capsize? A broach? How many news writers know the difference?

Re: Life Lost in Capsize

The original article says the boat was 20-30 meters offshore. As others have pointed out, these news articles more often than not have their facts confused. However, if that is accurate in high winds 20-30 meters could easily be in large breaking waves. Any keelboat could capsize in those conditions.

That depends on who you ask.

Racing Rules of Sailing. Rule 23:
A boat is capsized when her masthead is in the water.

Then there's Wikipedia:
When a boat is "turned over completely" it has turned turtle.[1][2][3][9] Some sources treat the term "turtle" as synonymous with "capsize" or "keel over".[4][10] but most others make a distinction.[D] Carrying too much sail or loss of control can lead to broaching — "Broaching is when the boat heels too far to one side, or capsizes."[11] While all turtlings involve a capsize, the converse is untrue.

As for a broach, the same source:
A sailboat broaches when its heading suddenly changes towards the wind due to wind/sail interactions for which the rudder cannot compensate. This happens when the aerodynamic force on the rig greatly exceeds the hydrodynamic force on the hull, due to a sudden increase in wind strength or turbulent sea conditions. In small boats and dinghies, broaching can lead to a death roll. In larger boats broaching can lay the mast horizontal,

Re: Life Lost in Capsize

Who would be sailing 20 to 30m from shore ??
Would seem not a capsize but driven onto a lee shore after a sheet got wrapped around the prop shaft.

Re: Life Lost in Capsize

So sad, and more facts are needed from the survivor about what happened. I'm left wondering why a 24 year-old female swam a short distance to shore, leaving a 72 year-old man on a foundering vessel, or in the water. Was he already dead?
