Purchase of a Jeanneau 45DS V 49i

Hi all,
I am after opinions on purchasing a Jeanneau 45DS or a 49i
Both boats are a similar price.
What do you think of their sailing abilities?
Size and accommodation apart the 45Ds is an Australian delivered boat and the 49i has been brought in from Europe.
Thoughts?

Re: Purchase of a Jeanneau 45DS V 49i

I just replied to someone else along these lines, so here it is again: Where you gonna sail her, are you gonna sell her soon? I ask because if one boat is from OZ then there will be no vat paid status on her, whereas the one from the EU will have Vat paid status (unless from croatia, which is why they are cheaper). Might make a difference in your calculus re resale and/or sailing in the Med....

Re: Purchase of a Jeanneau 45DS V 49i

Hey Fred, I have a Jeanneau Sun Fast 43

If I have the specs right, re your question "sailing abilities" the 49i being a longer boat with deeper bulb keel and the more sail area that goes with that, the 49i will sail better. Although "better" is a subjective term and both boats receive good reviews regarding sailing ability. You can contact Jeanneau and request the sailing polar diagrams and compare the differences (in theory) at different points of sail. The 49i will be faster.

I think both boats will perform well and be comfortable.

Perhaps consider crewing aspects, manoeuvrability, maintenance/mooring costs. Swings and Roundabouts.

The hull specs 45DS v 49i:
LWL: 11.45 v 12.98
LOA: 13.75 v 15.07
Beam: 4.37 v 4.49
Draft: 2.05 v 2.35
Ballast: 2954 v 3640
Displacement: 10400 v 12600

The rig specs 45DS v 49i:
I 16.54 v 17.0
J 4.65 v 5.68
P 15.27 v 16.55
E 5.3 v 5.7

Main 47.6 v 55
Genoa 53 v 67
Main + Genoa 100.6 v 122

Here is a link to review of the 45DS, nice boat by all accounts

You should be able to find a 49DS for similar price in the Med.
Australia is known for high resale values, and the Med is flooded with ex charter boats for sale.
I like the DS aft galley over the I fwrd galley. More headroom large windows.
Oherwise same hull, rig and interiour layout.

Re: Purchase of a Jeanneau 45DS V 49i

frednerk1 hi
The sun Odyssey 45 Ds is a extraordinary boat. I can give you cents of reasons, but don't buy a nude one.
I spent 8 years to improve one and if you wish I can give you a complete description of the most spectacular SO45Ds in the world.... I not joking
It is not cheap but just last year I spend 50 000€ in a total refit; the boat is ready to go around the world.
If you have interest I send you a complete description and photos.
the boat is actually in Barcelona, but next week come to Cascais- Portugal.
The reason Why I want to sold her is because I bought a Amel 55.... but it is more fun sailing with SO4Ds with Small Jib, Code 0, Assymetric Spy and so on....

Re: Purchase of a Jeanneau 45DS V 49i

It is probably a matter of personal taste at the end of the day but I have been on a 45DS and was impressed.

I have a 49DS and all I can say is that it is chalk and cheese against a 49i. The latter being nowhere as well made, designed or comfortable to spend a lot of time on. As far as I am aware both hulls are the same on the 49.

With Jeanneau a lot depends on the year. The later boats are less traditional. That is not to say that they are worse. Again, it is a matter of taste.

My money went on a DS and from my perspective you might be happier doing the same. However, whatever floats your boat. As they say.

Re: Purchase of a Jeanneau 45DS V 49i

Had a 42ds and loved it. The few negatives were occasional slapping at anchor in the aft cabin, a long stairway at the companionway due to the high cockpit, a bit difficult exiting the cockpit, and a tendency with the single rudder to round up in a puff. Our local Jeanneau dealer says that happens with his personal SO too. That tendency wasn't too bad. Raced and cruised it actively. Very similar performance to Beneteau 423, Catalina 42 and Hunter 42, all of which have almost identical PHRF ratings in our area.

Re: Purchase of a Jeanneau 45DS V 49i

I have a 45 DS for 10 years- 25000 nautical miles
Problems- ZERO
Medium cruising speed- at least 7 knots
Last journey: Barcelona to Lisbon ( 810 nautical miles = 5 days ) - a 62 years couple on board
The trick: staysail, genoa, CODE 0 and asymmetric (all from cockpit)

Take a look:
