Re: Searunner or Norman Cross
I'm kinda late to this thread, but I loved my Searunner 37 #1. Sailed her from Samoa to the Virgins, westward and had a marvelous trip.
Sailed 1200 miles to weather up the Red Sea in 20 to 35 knots and was told that we were the first multihull of any kind to sail all the way up, by the workers in the Canal. I do not know if it was true??? Boat sailed on wind vane in 6 knots of wind, up to 60 (when I took over on general principles). Fast, comfortable and so easy to sail, even before roller furling! You could not find a better cruising boat, given she was in good condition, of course. If I was half my age, I'd have a 37 or 40 without a doubt, but now I want the creature comforts (air, tv/dvd, lots of refer space) & all the toys which you cannot have on a cruising tri. Good luck. |

Re: Searunner or Norman Cross
When I purchased the Searunner, it was called "La Una". I renamed it "Haleakala".
If it is around, it should be pretty easy to identify; I had the aft dinette trim carved in Bali. Would really love to know where she is, it was the best cruising boat I ever sailed and we did lots of miles together. |

Oh, yeah, I forgot; old timer's disease, I guess.
She had the Brown designed vane; a marvelous piece of gear. |

Re: Searunner or Norman Cross
Another thing; I would toss the inboard & put a 15 or 25 hp long shaft OB on the rudder. It would slide up out of the water. These boats sail in no air; I rarely used the engine except for in harbors & it seemed that an OB on the rudder would be easy maneuvering, much less weight, less drag (prop) and certainly quieter.
Gotta have an outboard rudder, but I'd want one on a tri, anyway for the vane. |

Capta
Sounds like you did some miles in her. I looked through the Searunners Owners list and Googled around a bit but no Haleakala. You could try to ask around in this forum where she is you never know... something about when a boat leaves you and your fond of her. They kinda get part of your person.... especially when one builds the boat its hard to let go. I like the sound of a bali carving ... should do it in mine. |
