Cockpit cushions

One of the things that I like about the Elan 444 that I'm in the process of buying is that the cockpit seats are wide and long enough to sleep on. From experience I know how wonderful it is to sleep topside in the heat of the Caribbean.

I want to make cushions for them but I don't want something like the dense "topsiders" that are not comfortable sleeping on. Can you give me a recommendation on what inside material would give soft cushioning and still not absorb water? I'm sure it is made but I don't know the name to look for or what terminology to use.

Thank you in advance of any help you can give.

Re: Cockpit cushions

You can use Sunbrella Furniture Fabric, which has a softer hand, and stuff 'em with styrofoam beads (like beanbag material) and have Phifertex mesh bottoms

Sailmaker's Supply has all of this stuff, if you're inclined to fabricate for yourself

Re: Cockpit cushions

If the cockpit seats are wide be sure to get back cushions to make them comfortable when not sleeping!
I would ask a cushion maker, there is a foam that is water resistant... forget what it's called.

Seriously? Kinda ruins my idea of asking questions on a forum...
I, too, want specifications on closed cell foam for the cockpit cushions!

Re: Cockpit cushions

Really!!

Its an old thread but I am actually looking at buying them. The material of choice for me would be sunbrella on quick dry or fast dry foam.
Check on Sailrite, they sell it.
