Wharram Catamarrans advice sought for

I can't say anything about Wharram catamarans, but since you are planning to buy a boat that your wife likes to have and sail, I recommend two key criteria, 1) safety and 2) boat interior (nice, like home). Those two criteria should take total precedence over any of your possible masculine sailing dreams. When these two criteria are met, you can take ownership of the rest of the technical details of the boat. :-)

A good friend of mine has a 40' Wharram that I've sailed on a lot. It's a great boat that you could cruise pretty much anywhere it you're up to it. I've been out on this boat in heavy weather & it handled it very well. It only draws 2 feet so it's great for gunkholing. There is tons of deck space so a lot of people can daysail comfortably. However, if your wife is not thrilled about cruising this is not a boat that will change her mind. The interior is minimalist & rather spartan. It's a blast as a day sailor or weekender but, at 59, I wouldn't want to live on it. If I was in my 20's I wouldn't think twice.

Wharrams point well, beach them anywhere, basic kit for repair, low tech with good performance. Well worth thinking about.

The Tiki 36 may be considered 'minimalist' by a large bulk of the US members.. but for us Brits and EU folk its pretty comfy.. but then we are a hardy breed.. not gone soft like you lot..

Uncivil, yup, have been to the websites and pondered the great literature. I have taken the time. Part of the knowledge base should always be built from either personal experience or from those who aren't trying to sell you something. That is why I posed the question of what have CF members experienced.


Some people say the Wharram's don't go to weather well. Some say they don't tack well. I know they are a Spartan set up...Well, time to go to the salt mines and earn my keep. But when I put in Wharram Cat's under the CF search engine nothing showed up...or I did something wrong...which is a real possibility...smile

The bigger Wharrams are ketch rigged & point like you'd expect. However, they track pretty well due to the long straight keel. As we all know everything's a trade off with boats & they are no exception. Wharrams are simple boats that are relatively easy & inexpensive to build & will take you just about anywhere pretty safely. There's not a lot of protection at the helm so I'm not sure I'd take one to Alaska but they are pretty cool boats and a lot of fun.

I love Wharram' s, my first boat was a Tiki 31. I still row upto them in anchorages just to check them out. In saying that the lack of internal space is the limiting factor for me. And my experience is.....if youd like a female companion most women would need a large Wharram to feel comfortable. Minimum for me would be a Tiki 38 which you will get for under 80k. Preferably Id like a 46 but then your talking big bucks. My first sailing day was on my wharram , offshore breeze doing 9-11knots flat water, my experienced cruising mate turned to me and said " this boat just set you up for disappointment, rarely will you sail this well again" haha.
