Learning my new R-marine wind instrument

Just got a new suite of instruments from Raymarine and am trying to understand the little white and red dots on the wind display. Are they supposed to be showing max and mins, average wind direction, or something else? I cannot find any documentation referring to them.
Assuming they show max and min, would the intended use be to tell when you are being lifted or knocked? I have only used the system twice so far with one of them motoring dead into the wind and the other with less than 1 knot of wind so I cannot really grasp how they work.

Dan
