Vancouver 42 "cow-catcher"/diamond stay rigging

Hello all,

I am looking at a Vancouver 42. I does not have the "cow-catcher" diamond stay rig that is unique to these boats. Did all Vancouver 42s come from the factory with the "cow-catcher" diamond stay rig? Attached is a pic from aft of the mast, I know it's not ideal for my question but it's all I have now. I'm going to go look at the boat soon and wanted to get an idea of the ramifications of this possible issue.

Thanks for your help!

Does appear to have upper intermediates from upper spreaders aft. The strut thing is a crazy idea and really unnecessary when fitting these aft stays works on the 1000s of other cutter rigs around.

Re: Vancouver 42 "cow-catcher"/diamond stay rigging

Doesn’t seem to make sense to have jumper struts unless the section at the top of the mast is really bendy - which wouldn’t seem too likely on a cutter rig with multiple forestays. Talking to a rigger and the owner would be indicated. Why do others have them; why doesn’t this one? Does it work without the jumpers, or does it pump? Our J/36 has jumper struts, but it’s a fractional rig with the forestay about 12’ below the masthead; we need them to keep things stiff up there.

As far as I know the Tayana Vancouver 42s all came with the bowed diamond stay arrangement. It very effectively keeps the mast in column without the need for running back stays. Mr. Wilson Chang at Ta-Yang Shipyards can probably answer your questions about any Tayana V42 customized with a different spreader configuration.
