Catalina 30 rudder repair/design

I have a Catalina 30T. 1990. Went aground early in this past season and chewed up the bottom of the rudder. Rudder also has some signs of delamination in a couple areas, so I am looking at an overall repair.

I have seen some information about a more optimal rudder shape, both cross section (NACA 0012 airfoil) and profile (leading edge curves aft towards the bottom of the rudder). This reportedly improves weather helm, pointing ability and ease of maneuvering under power.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Anyone have any plans?

I am not opposed to reshaping the rudder - I believe the most crucial tasks will be building a jig to hold the rudder in a proper position, and also aligning the rudder properly with the centerline of the shaft. I know I can also make a jig to use my router to create the NACA 0012 profile. And I can do it for a lot less $$ than a new rudder.

Or, I can just repair the rudder in its current shape.

Thanks in advance for any input/advice!

The rudder draft is not as deep as the keel, but I don't exactly know the difference.

Happy sailing, everyone!!

Check the leading edge of the rudder stock where it enters the glass work of the rudder itself- there might be crevice corosion. If you grounded then there's a good possibility your rudder post is bent. Straightening it will weaken it further.

Catalina rudders had cores of either bondo or 16 lb foam (supposedly). The posts were Schedule 40 stainless tubing- thin wall. The stainless was probably 316 and not 316L. Coremat and biaxial glass were/are used but only single layers.

If your rudder stock isn't bent you can approach the problem 3 ways;

1- Buy a new HDPE rudder (over $3,000) or get one from Foss foam.

2- Dry out and then re-glass the effected areas.

3- Make your own rudder. It's pretty easy. Somewhere on the web is an excel program that'll provide the NACA 0012 foils and allow you to print them out for patterns.

Have you checked with the association to see what guidance they can provide?

I ended up replacing the rudder with an HDPE rudder from Rudder Craft. Insurance claim. Still have the old rudder, not sure what I'm going to do with it. Nothing in the foreseeable future.
