I would disagree with that. I suppose it depends where you're shopping, but where we are in Spain, privately owned since new production boats are certainly common, if not prominent.

Just my impression from casual browsing of the secondhand market.

We may both be right, it could well be there are lots of privately owned ones as well that simply don't get cycled onto the market with the same frequency as ex-charter.. or maybe the privately owned ones started life as ex-charter?

Either way they all, almost without exception, seem to be maximum berths and heads with low tankage, storage etc.

libspero, your last point may be the difference. Our interest is always for minimal berths & heads, and maximum tankage. Both our boats have been owner's versions. If you're looking for the opposite, you're definitely in the ex-charter realm.

Of course you can sail around the world in a Jeanneau or Beneteau. ...Old Catalina 27's have done it why couldn't you?

A couple I know crossed the atlantic several times in their 50DS and are totally happy with the boat while they live in her straight for 18 months.
