Yes of course, by all means they have and have done so many times. Keep in mind that many salty seaman have done it in much less boats through out history. I am sure some have tried and failed also. The question you have to ask yourself is how much do you believe in yourself and your ability to do it and how much faith do you have in your vessel. Yes it can be done in an Outisland but the Outisland was not designed to do it.

Re: Info On Morgan Out Island 44 and 51

I am looking at a OI 51 and plan to sail Tampa bay for a few years then head south tortugas, Caribbean , a year then Bahamas , Bermuda a year and finally the Mediterranean., and Europe then back to new England and south again and through the canal. Then the Pacific Northwest. Turning 60 this year. It’s now or never!

Re: Info On Morgan Out Island 44 and 51

I had a 1982 OI 51, hull #23. The boat was ridiculously strong. The worst conditions we had was 35-40 knts with 15' short period waves, with step faces in the gulf stream. The boat was fine, no detectable flex or squeaking inside. We were getting tossed around, but the boat was fine. We also hit a small coral head on the Caico Bank going 8 knts. It was early morning, sun in our eyes, no way to see it. The boat lifted 4", and just kept going until we were over it. Later, when we dove on it to check damage, the bottom of the keel had a few scratches. We were relieved and amazed. I would take that boat anywhere.

It is slow. It takes a good breeze to make it move. These boats are also getting old, and many of them are in poor condition. If you can find a nice one, it will take you anywhere.
